Millions of Americans celebrate Independence Day with their friends and family every July, likely hosting barbecues and watching colorful fireworks fall through the sky. And while this holiday is a great reason to get together with loved ones, it also symbolizes the birth of America and the wonderful things it stands for. In America, we’re fortunate enough to have rights that many other countries don’t have, one of which is the right to a jury trial in our legal system. Today, many people dread being called for jury duty and even try to find ways to avoid going. We take it for granted now, but this ability to be judged by our peers, have a fair trial, and not be subjected to the will of a king or dictator is what our country fought for. It’s why the pilgrims left in the first place, to escape an unjust king (King James I) in England. If something happened to you under his rule, the outcome of your trial could depend on how he felt that day or even just his opinion of you.
provides all citizens the right to a jury trial in a civil case. People just like you make up this jury — people who shop at the same grocery store, have children in the same school, and, most importantly, also want to make their community a better place. A jury comes from all walks of life, and it’s that diversity that helps create a fair system of justice. That’s why in our personal injury cases, we always take the time to remind jury members of the critical role they play in our society and remind them that what they’re present to do that day isn’t a waste of time. It’s what makes America fair and protects everyday people from big corporations like insurance agencies and irresponsible or liable parties. Everyone in America has a right to be protected, and it doesn’t matter if you’re rich, poor, educated, or not; everyone deserves protection and justice. That’s why the Founding Fathers created our judicial system this way, to ensure that status never gives someone more or less privilege in the eyes of the law.
Suppose an injury case involves a dangerous driver, irresponsible property owner, or negligent health care professional. In that case, the jury members would likely want to keep them out of their community too. They don’t care about the status of those people or companies, but instead, they make decisions based on the fact that they want to keep their community — and the other people in it — safe. So this year, as your family enjoys the fireworks, delicious food, and each other’s company, take a moment to reflect on the privileges this holiday celebrates and how fortunate we are to have a justice system that protects us and not a king or queen. And, it’s not asking for too much, next time the court calls you for jury duty, we encourage you to view it as an opportunity to keep your community safe and fulfill your civic duty — we know we do. As the kids stay home for the summer, you may turn to a trampoline as a form of entertainment to keep them occupied, which is understandable, because trampolines have been providing family fun for decades. But unfortunately, they have also been a significant source of severe injuries. Trampoline jumping is a high-risk activity for children, and it is so dangerous, in fact, that the American Academy of Pediatrics strongly discourages parents from buying trampolines. But, if your family already has a trampoline, or still wishes to purchase one to enjoy its bouncy fun safely, here are a few trampoline safety tips! HOW TO STAY SAFE ON A TRAMPOLINE Trampoline injuries can be painful and extremely disruptive to a victim’s life. In the 19th century, Denmark and Prussia couldn’t agree on where to draw their border. Both countries refused to concede or couldn’t reach an agreement on which country would ultimately control Southern Jutland, which today is Germany’s northernmost state called Schleswig-Holstein. This refusal to compromise ultimately led to war, and in 1848, Denmark won control. However, their victory was short-lived, as roughly a decade later, the Second Schleswig War was underway. This time, though, Prussia was victorious. After their victory, the Prussian authorities slowly began to move into the peninsula, implementing new laws over the Danes living there. These new laws prohibited anything Danish, including all uses of the Danish flag. Needless to say, the Danes were not happy — especially the farmers. These Danish farmers knew they had to protest this oppressive Prussian government, but they couldn’t just publicly wave the Danish flag. So, they got crafty. Danish farmers began to crossbreed their pigs to create a new breed, one that had the same markings as the Danish flag. These pigs were red in color, with one white vertical stripe and one white horizontal stripe. The farmers named their new pigs Protestschwein, or the Danish Protest Pig. This protest pig quickly became the mascot of Danish cultural independence, and their efforts didn’t go unnoticed by Prussian authorities. In 1881, a local Prussian police station sent communications back to the government in Berlin that farmers were breeding strange-looking pigs. However, while they could not prove that farmers were knowingly breeding the pigs to look like the Danish flag, “it was believed that the farmers were well aware of this and that this pig represented an affront to the Prussians,” according to records from the Red Holstein Breeders Association. Today, the Danish Protest Pig is recognized as its own breed but has a different name: the Husum Red Pied. And, the now-German state of Schleswig-Holstein supports the protection of this pig due to the cultural significance it offered its Danish ancestors so many years ago. • Ensure the trampoline has protective pads on all springs and the metal frame. • Only allow children over 6 years old on the trampoline. • Limit trampoline use to only one person at a time. • Supervise children on trampolines and at trampoline parks. • Do not allow trampoline tricks or risky moves. • Remove a trampoline ladder when not in use to prevent kids from jumping unsupervised. It’s important to know that many trampoline injuries arise even when the victim uses the trampoline correctly. Collisions between multiple people on the trampoline and falls can cause serious injuries. Injuries can also occur due to dangerous product defects, such as a trampoline mat that rips while in use. In these cases, parents of injured children may be able to file product liability claims against the item’s manufacturer for damages. e Safety This Summer N FROM SERIOUS INJURIES

RESET YOUR SKIN WITH SKINTERMITTENT FASTING THE SKINCARE HACK EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT
HOW TO SKINTERMITTENT FAST The first step is to use a gentler, hydrating cleanser without harsh ingredients. Look for a cleanser with hyaluronic acid and ceramides to help build back your skin’s barrier. Next, you’ll want to follow with a moisturizer containing sodium hyaluronate, ceramides, and hyaluronic acid, all great ingredients for repair and hydration. And that’s it! The key is avoiding products containing “pro-inflammatory ingredients like retinoids, acids, bleaches like benzoyl peroxide, hydroquinone, and aggressive exfoliants — especially those with scrubbing grains,” says Dr. Malik. Skintermittent fast for about a week to let your skin fully recover, and then continue your previous routine as usual to enjoy this trend’s hydrating and restorative benefits!

and beta hydroxy acids, physical or chemical exfoliates such as retinol and retinoids, you can allow the skin’s epidermal barrier to reset and rebuild,” he says. A lot of the skin products we use daily contain harsh ingredients, and while they may help us solve whatever issue we’re trying to address (acne, wrinkles, pigmentation), their harsh chemicals can damage our skin over time, so giving our skin a break from these products gives it time to rebuild and recover. THE BENEFITS OF SKINTERMITTENT FASTING By giving your skin a break from harsher ingredients, your body can reduce the irritation and inflammation it has built up in response to those products. The reduced inflammatory response results in more hydrated, clear, and glowing skin that is less puffy and more elastic.

This diet trend inspired the latest skincare fad, “skintermittent fasting.” WHAT IS SKINTERMITTENT FASTING? Like the diet, skintermittent fasting involves giving your body a break from its regularly consumed products. But instead of food, you’re giving your face a break from your usual skincare routine. According to Kunal Malik, MD, a board-certified dermatologist, there’s good reason to give your skin a breather: “By avoiding stronger acids like alpha hydroxy acids
