Hometown St. Thomas January-February 2026 Issue 76

Letter from the Editor Well, here we are: January -- the month when many of us quietly reflect on our December decisions, usually while avoiding eye contact with the leftover shortbread staring at us from the counter. Let’s be honest: December is a wonderful time of year, but it’s also the annual festival of, ‘Sure, I’ll have seconds,’ and, ‘Why stop at two desserts?’ And then January comes

ask our health experts the same question: What’s one simple thing someone can do to feel better? Because we all know that once you start feeling good, you want to keep going. Eight thousand steps become ten thousand. A few extra vegetables turn into rediscovering the joy of cooking. It’s a slow build, but a powerful one. And of course, feeling better isn’t just physical. Mental health matters profoundly. When I was younger, ‘anxiety’ was something you told a friend to walk off. As I’ve aged, and hopefully grown a bit wiser, I’ve come to understand just how real and varied mental health struggles are. They affect people in different ways, often silently. I’ll admit, by nature, I’m a fixer. You come to me with a problem, and I start building solutions like it’s my job. Unfortunately, mental health doesn’t work that way. What people often need isn’t an answer; it’s understanding. Listening. Support. No judgement. So, if you’re still searching for a New Year’s resolution, here’s one that just might make a difference: let’s all strive to be a little more empathetic to those whose struggles we may not see or fully understand. Thanks for reading, and here’s to a kinder, healthier year ahead.

along like a polite waiter, firmly presenting the bill. Traditionally, this is when we all vow to ‘be healthier,’ sometimes for a month, a week, or, if we’re being brutally honest, a couple of inspired days. As someone who’s been a bigger guy most of my life, I think far too much attention gets placed on the scale. Weight matters, absolutely. Life is a bit easier when you’re not lugging around extra pounds. But health is so much bigger than a number. That’s why our January issue always leans into health and wellness. We’re all getting older, and our bodies don’t exactly snap back the way they used to. But good health isn’t about reinventing ourselves just because the calendar flipped. It’s about small, sustainable changes, the one step that leads to another. For some, that step is a gym membership. For others, it’s walking a little more, swapping a sugary snack for something green, or maybe cutting back from eight cups of coffee a day to, say, six. Tiny adjustments can lead to big changes. I always

Battle of the Bowls by Peri Hayes

ENTERTAINMENT RESERVE YOUR SEATS

Dedicated to raising funds for Heart and Stroke, Soup’s On is a committee comprised of Debbie Paret, Jason Turner, Leah Wearn and Lea Wilson. Operating Soups On locally for over a decade, Phil Shelley raised over $100,000 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

INNER ELDER

Upon his passing, Jason and his fellow committee members recognized their passion to continue this community event in memory of Phil and his impactful legacy. With Phil’s family in attendance for their 2025 debut, Jason and Leah reflect, “People were excited this event was back. We surpassed our goal, raising nearly $6,000.” This was a bonding experience and a learning curve for the team, who detail the appreciated support of 25 volunteers and the approximated 300 guests in attendance. Jason and Leah voice, “The response was phenomenal, and this event has been well-supported.” Jason expresses, “I think that everyone has been touched by heart and stroke in one way or another. Battle of the Bowls is about raising awareness, and gathering the community together.” With Lea having Heart and Stroke work experience and Debbie being a heart transplant survivor, this event is near and dear to the hearts of those proudly on this committee. Jerome Thomas, an upbeat musician playing the classics, will be returning this year with his highly anticipated live entertainment. This event will further entail their charismatic Emcee, first responder participants, their silent auction and raffle, and the esteemed fundraiser feature – delectable soup samples prepared by local chefs. Planning to feature five soup options, the committee reveals that five chili dishes will also be incorporated this year. There will be a judges panel, prizes and more. In particular, the evaluated categories include Best Presentation, Judges’ Choice and People’s Choice. As Jason works in stained glass, he decided to create and sell symbolic pieces throughout the event. Evolving the design this year, each ornament costs $10.00 -- with half being directly funnelled into the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Jason delightedly announces that they sold nearly 100 last year. Sponsored by Mortgage with Brad, Battle of the Bowls is scheduled for this February 5th at the St. Anne’s Community Centre from 11:00 am until 1:30 pm. Entry costs $8.00 in advance, or $10.00 at the door. Ticket purchase and placed donations are accepted through the heartandstroke. crowdchange.ca/126898 website. Moreover, Heart and Stroke awareness reading material is available for readers to peruse. The Soup’s On committee is grateful for the gracious contribu- tions from the community; whether toward their auction, donating funds, or offering your own time. Mayor Joe Preston and Doug Tarry Homes have been actively supportive of this continued event. Furthermore, Jason and Leah enthuse, “Our volunteers are the cornerstone.” Visit ‘Soup’s On Battle of the Bowls 2026 for Heart & Stroke’ on Facebook, and email soupsonhs@gmail.com with inquiries about this upcoming Battle of the Bowls. From There to Here with TJ & IA by Peri Hayes

TJ Okagbare and IA grew up in Nigeria. Having lived in Preston, England for a number of years, the couple decided to move with their baby daughter to Canada this past summer. TJ has lived throughout the UK and Cyprus -- where he worked in media as a presenter and more, further developing his collaborative skills. The affable TJ expresses he and IA’s desire to live in a space which mirrors the small-town-feeling that they were leaving in England. A friend of TJ and IA’s had moved to St. Thomas several years ago, and spoke fondly of his experience. While the pair had been looking at residential opportunities closer to Toronto, TJ reveals why they instead turned toward the smaller city: “The population and the community here are more strongly aligned with what we were wanting.” AS TJ and IA continue to explore their new home and forge local connections, their sense of community already feels prominent. “The people are super nice,” IA voices. “That is it for me.” TJ highlights those who have gifted goods and materials to them, about which IA conveys, “People have gone above and beyond. I am so grateful.” To build their sense of community, the couple has been partaking in local events. IA shares that she attended the 2025 Oktoberfest, detailing, “I saw so many people there, and I heard Taylor Swift music. I am a fan, so this has been a good way to connect with others.” As well, their family visits to the Elevated Park are cherished. In the midst of this excitement, TJ and IA recognize hardship regarding the modern economy: “We have struggled upon our move, because we had structure in England.” For example, IA was a Psychiatric Nursing Assistant. Despite her qualifications, professional prerequisites vary from country to country. Therefore, the extensively skilled IA finds herself seeking employment for an entry-level role in the field which she is most passionate about. IA is pleased to announce that through networking, she has begun supporting her first client and is eagerly working toward her PSW Certificate.

Meanwhile, TJ begins his next chapter as a first-time business owner. As he, too, faced employment obstacles, TJ decided to utilize his technical skills in the community while growing his career. Seeking adrenaline and stimulation through his work, TJ is an IT and Wi-Fi Support Professional, such that two employees were required to replace his previous role in England. Having realized the market for this service, TJ proudly presents, “I recently installed a guest network for a Sparta-owned business. I also upgraded his PC Windows 8 to 10, and the RAM from 4GB to 8GB.” Avidly designing his business plan alongside professional advisors, TJ declares, “My goal is to create a rewarding customer service experience, offering freelance support for small businesses and individuals experiencing computer and Wi-Fi issues. We are taking the risk. It is important to try.” While reflecting on their local experience thus far, IA delightedly describes, “I believe that there’s a safety here which immigrants have. The people are so polite; I feel that Canada is my home. I feel at peace, I feel happy and I recommend St. Thomas as a place to live.”

Lewis Baked Goods Brings a Passion for Pizza to Talbot Street What started as a long-standing obsession with dough has officially risen into a full-fledged business at Lewis Baked Goods, located at 572 Talbot Street. Owner, Marty Lewis, may be new to the food industry, but his relationship with pizza goes back decades.

“For me, pizza -- I’ve been doing pizza for a long time, doing fa- mily events, serving a lot of people,” Marty says, “has been a bit of an obsession for de- cades. Pizza and dough in general.” The idea for Lewis Baked Goods began unexpectedly during

a casual conversation with Shawn at Lumberjack Pizza, who specializes in oven-ready meals. When the topic of pizza crusts came up, Marty offered to make a few samples. “I made him some samples on a whim,” he says. “He basically said, ‘How many of these can you get me and when?’” That moment sparked the search for a location and the launch of a wholesale crust business. Positive feedback soon led to something more. “The response to the wholesale has led to doing takeout,” Marty explains. “People were saying, ‘You really need to sell pizzas.’” At the heart of Lewis Baked Goods is the dough itself, long- fermented, carefully tracked, and thoughtfully crafted. “It’s fascinating how you can take flour, water, salt, a little bit of yeast, and then play around with different ways of fermenting it,” Marty says. “You can make it really good, or you can have it turn out not good.” His signature crust is inspired by multiple traditions. “It’s kind of a Roman dough Neapolitan inspired, with a little bit of New York in there,” he explains. The result is a pizza with a thin centre, a puffy edge, and a balance of crispness and chew. While the menu keeps things approachable with familiar toppings, Marty enjoys layering flavours. “You’re trying to hit all the right notes: acid, savoury, sweet, heat, and mouthfeel,” he says. Standout options include brisket and pork-based pizzas made with locally sourced meats, including brisket from Steve Shaw’s Smokin’ Habit food truck. Currently open for takeout Thursday through Saturday, 11 am to 7 pm, Lewis Baked Goods also handles wholesale orders earlier in the week. Customers can order in person, by phone, or online, with third-party delivery coming soon. Despite the learning curve, Marty says the leap into food has been worth it. “It’s terrifying,” he admits. “But if you’re afraid of something, usually on the other side of that is the best thing that’s ever happened to you.” With passion baked into every crust, Lewis Baked Goods is quickly becoming a must-try stop on Talbot Street.

Inside Early Literacy: Skills That Shape a Lifetime by Darlene Vreman, Library Services Coordinator: Children & Tweens What does it really mean to be literate? Merriam-Webster defines literacy as being educated or cultured, able to read and write, and having knowledge or competence. But in the early years, literacy looks a little different. For young children, it goes far beyond reading and writing: it includes kinetic literacy (building those important fine and gross motor skills) and social-emotional literacy (learning to understand feelings and interact with others). During the first five years of life, children’s brains are incredibly busy, forming thousands of new connections every single day. It’s a period of rapid growth, and play is the engine driving most of it. Still, there are a handful of foundational skills that help set children up for success once they reach school age. Every Child Ready to Read, an initiative of the Public Library Association and the Association for Library Service to Children, highlights six key early literacy skills: • Print Motivation (enjoying books) • Print Awareness (noticing print) • Letter Knowledge (recognizing letters) • Narrative Skills (telling and understanding stories) • Vocabulary (knowing the names of things) • Phonological Awareness (hearing and identifying sounds in words) While these concepts may sound academic, the good news is that they can all be nurtured through five simple, everyday practices:

READ. Sharing books shows children how words look and sound, builds vocabulary, and helps them understand that print carries meaning. It also sparks imagination and storytelling skills. TALK. Talking with children, about anything and everything, shows them how language works. Using rich, varied words boosts vocabulary and lays the groundwork for phonetic awareness. SING. Songs naturally break words into smaller parts, which makes them fantastic for phonological development. Singing also strengthens listening, memory, rhythm, and rhyme. WRITE. Early writing often looks like scribbling, but it’s important. Those small movements help develop fine motor skills and eventually support letter formation. Crayons, scissors, glue, playdough, anything that gets little hands working, helps. PLAY. Play is how children make sense of the world. Imaginative play, crafts, balancing, stop-and-go games, all of it supports the millions of neural connections forming in early childhood. How We Support Early Literacy at the Library We offer books for every age and interest, along with fun incentive programs like the Summer Reading Club and 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten. Our Kids’ Spot features activities designed to build early literacy skills, and we host three weekly ‘storytimes’. Beginning in January, we’ll also be expanding our toddler storytimes with extra hands-on activities that model literacy-rich experiences families can easily repeat at home.

Cura Clinic’s B-Pulse Chair by Peri Hayes At Cura Clinic, the B-Pulse chair is proving effective through various benefits. Robyn Granger, Cura Clinic Owner and Osteopathic Practitioner, alongside Mary Yates, Specialist, delightedly discuss this resource in the community. Cura Clinic opened shy of a decade ago, and the team has been operating in their current location for approximately two years. There are two other osteopaths and incredible nurse practitioners on-site, as well as two social workers booking online appointments. Meanwhile, Mary dedicated 16 years to her work as a PSW. She began as a patient of Robyn’s prior to seizing this opportunity to become a Specialist, managing their B-Pulse chair. As she beams, Mary has been with Robyn ever since. Through scientific research and proven results, the B-Pulse chair offers support toward back pain, circulation, endo- metriosis, infertility, postpartum, prolapse and much more. The chair will contribute to any of these conditions as a single resource: “Acting as a one-stop shop,” Mary enthuses. Robyn explains that there are approximately 32 conditions for men and women which the B-Pulse chair engages with: sexual dysfunction, urinary disorders, prostate for men and so forth. Strengthening pelvic stability and the lumbar region, the B-Pulse chair is designed to enrich daily comfort. As the magnetic field activates deep muscles, results can include improvement of posture, reduction of muscle tension and support for hormonal changes, such as menopause, through enhancing blood circulation. As Robyn passionately voices, “I feel as though B-Pulse targets a lot of things that are considered normal, or that often go ignored.” The Board Members of Christmas Care would like to extend a HUGE THANK YOU to our volunteers, our corporate donors, our individual donors, the City of St. Thomas, Elgin Centre, Ardent Industries (Steelway Building Systems), Jackpot Time, McDougall Energy (Formerly Dowler-Karn Fuels), local Emergency Services, area schools, area places of worship, area service clubs, our individual and anonymous donors, ETC., ETC., ETC. A special shout out to all the local businesses that gave their time, talent or treasure to help with providing food and toys and delivering packages this year. Some of our funding has come from the Elgin-St Thomas Community Foundation, and we are most appreciative of all our donors. May you all have a Prosperous and Happy 2026 from all of us at Christmas Care.

Dear City of St. Thomas by Mayor Joe Preston

As we approach 2026, I want to share my thoughts on the year ahead and the exciting opportunities that await our community. This coming year promises to be one of progress, growth, and continued investment in the people, neighbourhoods, and businesses that make St. Thomas such a special place to call home. One of the most significant developments shaping our city is the ongoing growth of the industrial lands at Yarmouth Yards, which will be home to PowerCo and, as recently announced, Vianode. These transformative projects will bring hundreds of high-skilled jobs, support local suppliers, and strengthen St. Thomas’ role in Ontario’s clean-technology sector. In 2026, residents will continue to see construction activity on the industrial lands, along with the long-term economic and training opportunities these projects create. Supporting this growth is our continued focus on critical municipal infrastructure. In the new year, City staff and Council will advance projects such as long-term water and wastewater planning, transportation upgrades, and neighbourhood road and sidewalk improvements. These projects are essential to ensuring that our city grows responsibly while maintaining affordability and quality services for all residents. Housing remains a top priority. In 2026, work will continue with new developments in subdivisions such as Harvest Run and Shaw Valley in southeast St. Thomas, alongside infill developments, rental units, and supportive housing. Collaborating with builders, nonprofit partners like Indwell and YWCA St. Thomas–Elgin, and senior levels of government, we are committed to providing safe, attainable housing for

families, seniors, and newcomers. We look forward to the redevelopment of Balaclava Street School by the end of 2026.

Investments in accessibility, trail maintenance, and upgrades will help ensure that residents of all ages can enjoy our natural and recreational assets. Preserving and enhancing these areas is vital to maintaining the quality of life that makes St. Thomas unique. As we look ahead to 2026, economic growth in St. Thomas extends far beyond the EV sector. Local manufacturers continue to expand, small businesses thrive, and downtown revitalization efforts are supporting new investment and entrepreneurial activity. Heritage and tourism remain strong draws for our city, with visitors enjoying landmarks such as Jumbo, CASO Station, the Elevated Park, 1Password Park, and the Elgin County Railway Museum, alongside downtown events like the Pumpkin Prowl, Light Up Talbot, farmers’ markets, and cultural celebrations. Looking ahead, 2026 will be a time when years of careful planning and partnership come to fruition. St. Thomas Social Clubs by Peri Hayes The diverse social clubs in St. Thomas and the surrounding area, each their own entity, do share universal benefits. Sense of community matters, and the connection between community engagement and mental health is evident. Whether through physical labour, socialization in a harmonious environment or supporting local initiatives in various ways, the individuals participating in this feature come together to shed light on their positive community service experiences. Kinsmen Club of St. Thomas Rico Mena, dedicated member of the Kinsmen Club of St. Thomas, voices, “I love the idea of helping those in my community. We are a bunch of guys who are ambitious and want to do good in the community. We love to have fun and help those who need support. We currently have 16 active members, and are always looking for more like-minded individuals.” As Rico passionately conveys, “The important aspect for me is the friendships that are formed with people that love

to have fun and are selfless at heart -- people that you can count on.” Meeting on a monthly basis, the local Kinsmen Club hosts a number of events and directs donations toward community initiatives, about which Rico enthuses, “We love to give money away!” Recently, for example, they placed a meaningful donation to Ignite Youth Centre. For those with interest, Rico delightedly describes, “We meet on the first Wednesday of every month, and would love to have you come out to enjoy a cold beer and see what we are all about.” To gather further information, connect through email at Al Holt, Lieutenant Governor of the surrounding zone — stretching a 20 km range from St. Thomas — recounts what drew him to the Optimist Club of St. Thomas: “It was inspiring to grow up in the Locke’s community, seeing the involvement of our parents with the fair and the fireworks. My dad was in this Club and invited me to a meeting -- I have been with the Club almost 25 years now.” president@stthomaskinsmen.com. Optimist Club of St. Thomas

Geared toward high school-aged students, Al highlights their Joy Club: “Children are involved in local events, experiencing the fun you can have while benefiting the community.” There are currently 45 Optimist Club members in St. Thomas and approximately 164, zone-wide. Recommending this social opportunity, Al beams, “This is exactly what we do -- while contributing to the community and with our focus on youth, we can be actively engaged with people. Some members are retired, and this Club is a way to remain involved while making a positive difference. Supporting one another and remaining social is what we need.” Nearing 2025’s end, the Optimist Club sponsored the Santa Claus Parade. Throughout the summer season, they operate their food trailer to raise funds for community causes. “We have seven clubs — along with our Joy Club — in St. Thomas and the surrounding area. If you see the Club out in the community throughout the year, connect with us and discover how you can become involved!” Email inquiries to stthomasoptimist@outlook.com, or mail to Optimist Club, PO Box 20014, St. Thomas, ON, N5P 4H4. They also have an active social media presence and, as Al assures, “We will certainly point people in the direction that best suits their needs.” St. Thomas Railway City Rotary Club With experience in various roles, Bryan Vine is the President- Elect of the St. Thomas Railway City Rotary Club and will be formally assuming this role in July: “I’ve been a member of three Rotary Clubs in the last 15 years, and I joined because of the local projects that the Rotary is involved in. All Rotary Clubs share the same purpose, focusing on community service of a wide range through international service, youth projects and more. Many of our projects provide support to underprivileged countries with water shortages.”

St. Thomas Railway City Rotary Club has donated toward the MRI machine at STEGH, and nourishes their ongoing collaboration with Barrie Family Hospice of Elgin. They support food projects — including the local Harvest Hands — while the recent YWCA Toy Drive entailed community donations, distributed by the Rotary Club. There are presently 28 members, inclusive of every gender, about which Bryan expresses, “Having females on board and lending perspectives on the needs that we spend our time supporting is valuable.” St. Thomas Railway City Rotary Club is an environment for building relationships, mentoring and learning from one an- other: “We are very involved, and with high participation.” As Bryan encourages, “There is a need for volunteers in our community. With every service club being different, try them all to decide which club you would like to further pursue.” The Club’s background, contact information and updates are available on the railwaycityrotary.club website.

Know Local Pet Regulations Licensing rules, leash laws, and noise ordinances vary by city — it’s best to check ahead. Buying a Home when you have Pets by Barb Ginson, REALTOR® and Wanita Johnston, REALTOR® with Royal Lepage Triland Realty Pets are family, and their needs matter when searching for a new home. Here are a few key things pet owners should keep in mind: Check The Pet Policies of Condos & Townhouses Pet Policies Some communities restrict pet size, breed, or number of pets. Always review the rules before putting in an offer. Look for a Pet-Friendly Neighbourhood Sidewalks, parks, trails, and nearby vets or pet stores can make daily life easier for both you and your pets. Consider Yard Safety A fenced yard (or the ability to add one) is a big plus. Make sure fencing is secure, and the yard is free of hazards. Choose Durable Flooring Scratch-resistant or easy-to-clean flooring like tile, vinyl, or laminate holds up best to busy paws. Think About Space for Pet Essentials Having room for food bowls, litter boxes, crates, or gear helps keep your home organized from day one.
