St. Thomas Social Clubs by Peri Hayes The diverse social clubs in St. Thomas and the surrounding area, each their own entity, do share universal benefits. Sense of community matters, and the connection between community engagement and mental health is evident. Whether through physical labour, socialization in a harmonious environment or supporting local initiatives in various ways, the individuals participating in this feature come together to shed light on their positive community service experiences. Kinsmen Club of St. Thomas Rico Mena, dedicated member of the Kinsmen Club of St. Thomas, voices, “I love the idea of helping those in my community. We are a bunch of guys who are ambitious and want to do good in the community. We love to have fun and help those who need support. We currently have 16 active members, and are always looking for more like-minded individuals.” As Rico passionately conveys, “The important aspect for me is the friendships that are formed with people that love
to have fun and are selfless at heart -- people that you can count on.” Meeting on a monthly basis, the local Kinsmen Club hosts a number of events and directs donations toward community initiatives, about which Rico enthuses, “We love to give money away!” Recently, for example, they placed a meaningful donation to Ignite Youth Centre. For those with interest, Rico delightedly describes, “We meet on the first Wednesday of every month, and would love to have you come out to enjoy a cold beer and see what we are all about.” To gather further information, connect through email at Al Holt, Lieutenant Governor of the surrounding zone — stretching a 20 km range from St. Thomas — recounts what drew him to the Optimist Club of St. Thomas: “It was inspiring to grow up in the Locke’s community, seeing the involvement of our parents with the fair and the fireworks.
