Joe Thornton Community Centre, Active Opportunities this Winter! by Peri Hayes This winter season, the accessible Joe Thornton Community Centre facilitates abundant opportunities for remaining in harmony with your physical health and sustaining your community connections. Martin Run, Booking Coordinator with the Parks and Recreation Department for 14 years and counting, introduces: “My position requires balancing the needs and schedules of many different groups, and ensuring we provide as many quality opportunities as possible for residents to stay active and engaged.” As Martin shares, “We are pleased to offer 44 hours per week of indoor drop-in pickleball and badminton. Our gymnasium features three pickleball courts and three badminton courts, providing ample space for participants of all skill levels. In addition, we provide 32.5 hours per week of drop-in skating and ice programs, including Public Skating, Parent and Tot sessions for new skaters, Youth and Adult Shinny and Drop-in Figure Skating.” All programs are operated on a drop-in basis, with no registration required in advance. Martin invites, “Simply arrive during any scheduled open time, pay the $5.00 admission and enjoy your activity. We are also excited to offer ten consecutive free skate sessions, held every Sunday from December 14th through February 15th, 1:15 pm to 2:35 pm.” Moreover, as Martin informs, “Our indoor walking track is free to use and open daily from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm -- with the exception of Fridays when it closes at 5:00 pm due to St. Thomas Stars’ home games.” The Joe Thornton Community Centre is open daily from 8:00 am until 11:00 pm, while the Parks and Recreation Office remains available between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm from Monday to Friday.
