The Honorable A. Donald McEachin 1961–2022 U.S. Congressman (D-VA), Attorney
U nited States Congressman A. Donald McEachin (D-VA) entered the Chapter Invis- ible on November 28, 2022. Aston Donald McEachin was born on October 10, 1961, to Ivan Benton McEachin, Jr. and Edna McEachin in Nuremberg, Germany. He attended St. Christopher’s School in Richmond, VA, and graduated in 1979 He earned a B.S. in Political Science from American University in 1982, a J.D. from Virginia School of Law in 1986, and a Master of Divinity from The Samuel DeWitt Proc- tor School of Theology at Virginia Union University in 2008. After graduating from law school, McEachin worked in several law firms before establishing 1990 his firm, McEachin & Gee. In 1997, McEachin entered politics and successfully won the seat for the 74th District in the Vir- ginia House of Delegates. In 2000, he lost an election for Attorney General of Virginia. In 2006, McEachin regained his old seat in the state legislative. In 2008, citizens of the 9th District of Virginia elected him to the state sen- ate. In 2016, McEachin decided to run
to represent Virginia’s 4th District in the U.S. Congress. Starting in January 2017, McEachin served his first term as a U.S. Congressman. Congressman McEachin led efforts to end gun violence, increase equality, and safeguard the environment. Ahead of the 2020 Affordable Care Act open enrollment period, he re-introduced the Advancing Youth Enrollment Act to help more young Americans with healthcare by increasing tax credits. He was a member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, the House Committee on Natural Resources (Natural Resources), and the Select Committee on the Climate Crisis. As a member of E&C, McEachin sat on the Environment and Climate Change, the Communications and Technology, and the Energy subcommittees. As a mem- ber of Natural Resources, McEachin sits on the Energy and Mineral Resources and the Oversight and Investigations subcommittees. He also sat on many caucuses, including the House Demo- cratic Caucus, CBC Energy, Environ- ment, and Agriculture Task Force (co-
chair), LGBT Equality Caucus, House Pro-Choice Caucus, and the Congres- sional Black Caucus. A Life Member of Kappa Alpha Psi, McEachin (Beta Kappa 1980) was a charter member of the Kappa Chi Chap- ter at American University. He was a member of the NAACP, the Virginia State Bar, and the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association. He was a former member of the Board of Governors of St. Christo- pher’s School and of the Health Sys- tem Board of Virginia Commonwealth University. Brother McEachin was preceded by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Colette Wallace McEachin and their three children, Mac (Amelia), Briana and Alexandra, infant grandson, Gael; and a host of other family, friends, colleagues and constituents.
