He went on to attend Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry Education in 1963. He participated in several activities at ECSU, including the marching band, concert choir, Student Christian As- sociation, and Polemarch of the Epsilon Alpha chapter. After graduation, he taught science courses at Unity High School then moved to Queens, NY where he worked as a research chemist and volunteered as a scout leader with the Boy Scouts of America. In 1969, he married Mildred Ann Turner in Statesville, NC. The couple moved to East Orange, NJ, and eventually settled in Somerset, NJ. He graduated from the College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 1976. He decided to specialize in Family Medicine and served as chief resident at Somerset Medical Center. In 1979, he established his private practice and provided medical care, community outreach, and mentorship for countless patients and medical students for over 40 years until his retirement in 2021. He had many civic memberships. He also enjoyed gardening, bowling, golfing, travel, singing, playing the piano and spending time in person and on the phone with family and friends. He was a Life Member of Kappa Alpha Psi for over 60 years. Many of those years were as a member of the New Brunswick Alumni Chapter. During his tenure with the chapter he served as the chapter Polemarch, Vice-Polemarch and as a member of the Board of Directors. He was awarded the Polemarch award in 2005. In addition, he joyously would sing with the Kappa Khorus any year that he was able to attend the National Konclave. In honor of his commitment to excel- lence and dedication to the chapter and fraternity, the Diamond Foundation, Inc., the philanthropic arm of the New

Brunswick Alumni Chapter, named their annual scholarship luncheon after him. The Dr. George A. Patterson Scholarship Luncheon has been an event used to recognize the accomplishments of grad- uating high school seniors in our area for nearly 20 years. He was considered the voice of reason for the chapter and made sure New Brunswick Alumni dem- onstrated excellence in every endeavor. If anyone would ask why, his notable response was always the same, “because that’s what Kappa men do.” He was predeceased by his parents, Oscar L. and Nellie M Patterson, broth- ers James, Scott, Howard, and Arthur Patterson, and sister Ollie P Byers. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Mildred (Turner); daughter Rhonda Ford (Gerald); son Kevin (Megan); broth- ers Oscar Jr (Mary Jane), Clifford, and Benjamin (Velma); sisters Lizzie Barber and Nellie (Ernest) Hargrove; grandchil- dren Jasmine and Ryan; several brothers and sisters in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, godchildren, cousins, col- leagues, and friends.
