my favourites) and I go to the gym regularly and I spoil my four grandchildren.” Daniel used to paint “many years ago, but I recently picked up my brushes again.” “My first impressions about Old South (in a nutshell): friendly, pleasant, pretty (nice architecture, beautiful tree-lined streets), culture and community-minded, respectful of nature and animal life, hedonistic, teeming with pedestrians. and smelling of flowers (in the summer) and good food,” he says. “The London Writers Society recently had a display/book sale at the Wesley Knox United Church, and again I was struck by the incredible attractiveness of the neighbourhood. For Salvador Dali, the center of the world was the Perpignan railroad station, for me it is pretty much Tuckey’s! Learn more about Daniel at www.danielsoha.com. Literally Fun Literacy is the only reading clinic in London whose credentials have been vetted by the International Dyslexia Association. Krista Dobsinai is currently the only practitioner in London with a Master’s in Reading Science who also has a Dyslexia Certificate from the IDA. She has also completed courses on Attachment Theory through the Neufeld Institute. Krista’s approach is built on a foundation of scientific evidence, surrounded by care, support, and fun. Krista has cultivated an environment that values curiosity, inquiry, scholarship—not rigid academic systems. Reading Sciences is a broad field, and much is known about how best to teach most students to read. Krista learned very quickly that a student is only 50% literate if all she does is remediate their reading, so in her literacy remediation clinic, she also remediates her students’ writing. Krista’s clinic, Literally Fun Literacy, focuses on developing the reading and writing skills of anyone from three to adulthood who struggles to read and write, whether or not they have an official diagnosis. Each student has their own individual learning profile ranging from a combination of dyslexia, deficits in reading and/or writing, ADHD, AuDHD, Mild Intellectual disability, and various speech challenges and/or any combination of these. Krista completes a thorough skills assessment using the Acadience Reading System (completed training on the Acadience Assessment and Comprehensive Fluency and Oral Language Assessment). Regardless of the learning disability, the recommended mode of remediation is direct, explicit, systematic instruction. This is often known as “Structured Literacy.” This girl went from not knowing the alphabet to reading 40 novels in 18 months! The most important thing to understand about reading acquisition is that there is no significant correlation between reading abilities or disabilities and intelligence.
Meet your new Old South Neighbour: Daniel Soha Born in Aix-en-Provence (France) to Hungarian-speaking parents, Daniel Soha is the holder of a Master’s degree in Anglo-American studies and a Masters of Education from the University of Aix-Marseille. A citizen of both France and Canada, he recently moved to Old South London to be near family. His pre-retirement roles as a translator with the United Nations, and a columnist for French cultural magazines in Singapore and Boston “became a kind of warm-up for writing fiction” he explains. He has published a number of novels and collections of short stories in French, was a two-time finalist of the Trillium Awards, and a two-time winner of the prize awarded by the French Book Fair in Toronto. A board member of the London Writers Society, Daniel describes his new book Sam’s Orchid as a “moral tale of beauty, sex, love, and the movies.” The book is available at mosaicpress. ca/products/sams-orchid, on Amazon.ca, and at Little Wren Books on Adelaide Street. Daniel says he’s a a collector “of mo- vies (DVDs), of pop-up books (!!), of North American native art (Pueblo pot- tery, Navajo rugs, Inuit and Iroquois sculptures), of original posters and paint- ings, and quite simply, of any oddities I can get my hands on, notably 1970s objects and paraphernalia. I also cook and was the author of a cookbook. I love sports (Rugby and boxing being Krista Dobsinai became a Dyslexia Interventionist for her dyslexic child (she ended up having two). Another mother in a comparable situation pointed Krista toward the Orton-Gillingham Academy and OGA training. For two years, Krista went to her daughter’s school four times a week to work with her daughter. By the end of grade four, her daughter was reading on grade level. It took a few more years to improve her daughter’s writing. Following her daughter’s success, Krista was approached by numerous parents to work with their children. That is when she knew that she had to go forward and continue this critical work. Krista went on to complete an OGA foundations course, an associate-level OGA training course, and a supervised associate practicum. She then earned her master’s degree in reading science with a focus on dyslexia, which also led to a Dyslexia Certification from the IDA (International Dyslexia Association). She has also trained with three orthographic linguists to gain a deep understanding of the English language, taken courses on linguistics, executive function, ADHD and other challenging behaviours, mindfulness training, and attachment theory from the Neufeld Institute. BESPOKE, WHEEL-THROWN POTTERY FUNCTIONAL, BEAUTIFUL PIECES FOR EVERYDAY USE WORKSHOPS • LESSONS John Dearness Alumni Successfully Breaking Barriers for Children with Literacy Disabilities by Gloria Rae When Krista and her brother Zoltan Dobsinai Jr. were growing up in Byron, they attended John Dearness School. While Zoltan was athletic and the class clown, Krista was the studious one, always pondering how she could make the world better. Well, fate had already decided her future - she was to become a selfless, dedicated, driven warrior for the cause of children with learning disabilities, primarily literacy.
