January 2023
A GOAL WITHOUT A DEADLINE IS JUST A WISH I MADE IT TO NEW YORK!
Going into 2023, I am encouraging you to start setting goals this month. Less than 50% of Americans set goals, and less than 3% actually achieve those goals. In fact, by the time you are reading this in January, 41% of you (who have set goals) will have already given up on your so-called New Year’s resolutions.
Let me share with you the goals on my 2022 list that I attained: Ride a horse, do 4 minutes of stand-up comedy, attend a USC football game in Los Angeles, rent a Basecamp trailer, start a campfire, get a golf lesson, shoot a gun, and build a house.
How do those 3% achieve their goals? The most important aspect of success is that they take the time to write it down. This doesn’t mean that if you write down, “I will lose 50 pounds this year’’ the weight will just magically fall off. However, it is a key component to achieving a goal. S.M.A.R.T. goals are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and — most important — time bound. Remember what I wrote in the headline about a goal without a deadline being just a wish? For 2023, I’d like to give you one more Tester Challenge to your goal-setting mindset. Build a list that says, “50 for 2023.” I did this last year, and at the top of my list of 50 for 2022 was taking a train to New York from Washington, D.C., with my son, Carson, and watching a
If you add visiting New York City and seeing a Broadway play, then I have achieved 10 of my 50 goals for 2022. I did not learn to rope, play the guitar, ride an electric bike, or play “Sweet Caroline” on my trumpet, but my success ratio was far higher than my failure rate. My trip to the Big Apple was amazing, and my journey with Carson was the best part. We would both recommend the play we saw: “Death of a Salesman.” Most Americans simply don’t set goals. For me in 2022, it wasn’t about the destination, it was about the journey. I still have a shot at going to the Miles City Bucking Horse show this spring, even though I missed that goal last year. However, riding a horse, hitting Broadway, and seeing the coliseum in Los Angeles with USC’s football team last fall prove that goals do come true! Make it S.M.A.R.T., make it matter, write it down, and set your deadline for 50 in 2023. If I made it to New York City, so can you. Broadway play! By the way, I had never been to New York City. However, I wrote it down along with 49 other goals one year ago — and the rest, as they say, is history.

AVOID THE JUNK MAIL LIST By Carefully Crafting Your Copy
Email marketing is one of the most effective, highest-converting, and scalable marketing strategies out there, but it also has one of the highest failure rates. Nothing is worse than seeing your hard work get sent to the trash folder, but that’s precisely what happens when the email campaign that took you weeks to perfect gets filtered to your prospect’s spam inbox. It is estimated that 20% of global commercial emails do not reach a customer’s inbox. This number is even higher for email marketers in the U.S., who have the lowest deliverability rate of any country at

make a split-second decision about whether to open the email or not when they see your subject line. So it’s crucial to have a clear, strong subject line that draws their attention! After all, if no one opens your email, no one will click through it. OUT-OF-DATE EMAIL LISTS If your email list contains addresses that no longer exist, have been disabled, or have full inboxes, your email provider may penalize you. This increases the likelihood of your emails ending up in the junk folder. An updated email list is the core of any email marketing campaign, and by maintaining it, you can create content and offers that reach your audience directly. It all comes down to carefully crafting your copy when sending successful emails. Think of it this way: If the email was sent to your inbox, what are the chances you would open it? If you wouldn’t, you cannot expect your customers to! A well-crafted business email can reach new customers, retain existing ones, and even make a customer purchase again and again.

One of the reasons your emails aren’t hitting the inbox may be that you’re using spam language. Certain words, codes, fonts, or images trigger these spam filters and, in turn, make the emails seem illegitimate. I’m Dave, the Director of First Impressions and I’m calling to apologize for doing such a lousy job following up with you.’ People appreciate honesty and humility over hubris. It’s an easy icebreaker — no pun intended — and people usually chuckle before opening up to a healthy conversation about their needs.” –Shaun Buck CEO, Newsletter Pro

SHOWING APPRECIATION IN THE WORKPLACE THROUGH ENCOURAGEMENT AND CONSIDERATION
TANGIBLE GIFTS A nice, personalized gift can be a display that you acknowledge your employee’s or coworker’s passions and preferences. The more you converse with them and learn about their personal lives, the easier it’ll be to choose a more meaningful gift and bring a smile to their face. APPROPRIATE PHYSICAL TOUCH This language can be tricky, but it’s about respecting boundaries. A high-five, fist bump, pat on the shoulder, and a handshake are generally acceptable, but it is best not to assume. Everyone’s level of comfort differs, so always ask before initiating any type of appropriate physical touch. If you take the time to understand your employees’ preferred language of appreciation, you can communicate more meaningfully and positively.
Have you ever heard of “The 5 Love Languages” by Gary Chapman? It’s an
message to be clear, consider describing the situation you’re referring to, discussing the behavior you are looking to celebrate, and highlighting the impact of the behavior on you, the team, and the organization. QUALITY TIME This language is all about receiving complete and focused attention. This means taking the time for mentorships, checking in meaningfully, and creating moments for teams to connect. For employees who value quality time, having dedicated time to connect and learn from their employers and coworkers can be significantly impactful as they feel seen and heard. ACTS OF SERVICE Simply picking up an extra coffee for a team member, or alleviating a work task off someone’s plate, shows that you care about their overall well-being and brings them joy.
incredibly popular book that identifies different ways individuals prefer to give and receive love. You can communicate more effectively with your partners, friends, and family by considering their personal needs and using the language that speaks to them best. But did you know you can apply these same principles to show appreciation and encouragement at work? When you understand and use your employees’ preferred language of appreciation, your workplace culture will significantly improve. WORDS OF AFFIRMATION A “thank you” note or shout-out from a colleague is quite powerful, but it’s even more effective when it’s specific to an act or moment because it shows that you are paying attention to what matters. You can hop aboard a snowmobile and ride the same path as the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race or visit some beautiful mountains and glaciers. Many of these tours will lead you right past moose, bears, and caribou as you take in the beauty of Alaska’s environment. A truly exceptional experience is skating on Mirror Lake. They have a 2-mile-long ice track where you can test your speed and areas for people to skate openly or play a game of ice hockey. You can even participate in dog sledding there. It’s a beautiful area filled with various winter activities. ICE FISHING EXCURSIONS IN BRAINERD, MINNESOTA While fishing might be more commonly known as a spring or summer activity, you can get plenty of fishing done in the winter if you know where to go. Brainerd is considered one of the best places to visit for ice fishing enthusiasts. There are over 300 fishing lakes near the city, and you can expect to catch bluegill, walleye, largemouth bass, yellow perch, northern pike, and many others. If you like to fish throughout the year, check out Brainerd.
