Tight Supply, Overseas Demand Boosting Recovered Paper Prices According to a report in Recycling Today , shippers of recovered paper in the U.S. have been receiving higher prices for several grades of the material this month, with steady demand and supply factors being cited as leading causes. Data from news and pricing service Fastmarkets shows that prices for several benchmark grades rose between $5 and $11 per ton at the beginning of the month.

Fastmarkets reported that domestic buyers of sorted office paper (SOP) and news grades were paying an av- erage of $132 per ton in early June, an increase of $11 per ton compared with the previous month. The pricing service also noted that mills in the U.S. Southeast were paying $10 more for old corrugated con- tainers (OCC) and other brown grades at the start of the month. This represented a 12 percent month-over-month increase in value for those materials. Although mixed paper remains the lowest-valued benchmark grade tracked by Fastmarkets, its price in- creased by $5 per ton to reach $28 per ton, reflecting a gain of more than 20 percent. Fastmarkets described domestic mill demand as sta- ble, with tight supply conditions—remaining steady but not expanding—along with stronger export demand contribut- ing to higher prices. “Strong domestic demand this year has kept more U.S. tons at home at the same time that total recovered pa- per exports increased by 2.3 percent in the first quarter of 2026, according to trade data from the US Census Bu- reau,” Fastmarkets wrote in mid-June. The publication also cited Census Bureau data show- ing OCC exports increased by 6.1 percent during early 2026, with shipments destined for India, Indonesia, Malay- sia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. In addition, Fastmarkets reported that buyers repre- senting Chinese packaging board producers Nine Drag- ons, Lee & Man, and Shanying International have remained active in the global market for OCC sourced from the Unit- ed States and other regions. However, export demand could weaken if freight rates rise significantly due to ongoing disruptions tied to the conflict involving Israel, Iran, and the United States, which has affected oil exports from the Middle East.
