WELCOME, 2023! Creating Goals for the New Year
Happy New Year, everyone! Can you believe it’s already 2023? We’ve just finished the holiday season, and we are now entering a time where some of you may outline what you want to accomplish for the year and jot down resolutions. Like some of you, Bismarck Advanced Dental and Implants and I have set goals to achieve throughout the year. For the dental practice, we want to improve our patient’s experience by strengthening and enhancing the time they spend with us. To achieve this, our team is constantly staying up to date with the latest technology that will help us take better care of our patients. As soon as new equipment is released, our team will research it, analyze it, and determine if it will be helpful for us and your experience in our office. In addition to keeping track of technology and new dental trends, we are constantly finding ways to build our team. Everyone on our team has a strong bond, and we treat one another like family. The connection we have with each other shines through to our patients. Because of how well we work together, we make everyone who walks through our doors feel more welcomed and comfortable. Therefore, we always find ways to improve our communication, collaboration, and motivation through honesty and team-building exercises. Personally, I have one main resolution for 2023: spend less time on my phone. We have the world right at our fingertips, which can sometimes take us away from the present moment. I want to spend more time living in the moment with my family. Like other aspects of our lives that we want to improve, adjusting to a new habit will be challenging. But I know that
spending less time on my phone will come organically with time and practice. I may even use some apps that will limit the time I use my phone. Now, it may seem ironic to use an app to help me spend less time on my phone, but there are tons of apps that assist many users who want to reduce screen time. No matter your goals and resolutions for the new year, it can be difficult to stay on task and accomplish them. According to a study by PubMed, 80% of New Year’s resolutions are abandoned by February. Some reasons people quit on their goals are because they weren’t specific enough, they didn’t outline steps to reach their objectives, or they had several resolutions they wanted to accomplish and became overwhelmed.
So, if you struggle to stay on top of your resolutions this month, don’t quit! Instead, modify and adjust your goals to be more realistic and attainable. One of the best ways to outline your goals is by using the S.M.A.R.T. method. This acronym stands
“We have the world right at our fingertips, which can sometimes take us away from the present moment.”
for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time. If there is a goal you want to achieve, apply the S.M.A.R.T. method to help you create an action plan. Each component will allow you to break down your goals and focus on why you want to achieve them and how you plan on doing them. I’m going to try the S.M.A.R.T. method with my New Year’s resolution, and I’m looking forward to seeing the results. When it comes to your goals, take small steps during your journey. It may not seem like much, but the smallest step can be a massive stride in the right direction. Always celebrate your victories — no matter how big or small they may seem and continue to push forward.
Happy New Year,
-Dr. Christopher Klym

OW! MY MOUTH HURTS! 7 Dental Issues That Are Dental Emergencies
We can’t predict the future, and sometimes unexpected things happen that we aren’t prepared for — some of these instances can be dental emergencies. These kinds of emergencies can happen at any time. But it’s important to note what’s considered a dental emergency and what you should expect from these visits. WHAT ARE COMMON DENTAL EMERGENCIES? While some oral issues may be uncomfortable, not all dental problems are considered emergencies. Below are some dental cases that are deemed to be urgent.
Is there a protocol for a dental emergency? What should you expect?
SCHEDULING TREATMENT Depending on how severe the issue is, your dentist will schedule you into their day as soon as possible. You could be seen immediately after calling, later that same day, or within the next few days. If your dentist cannot see you the same day as your injury, they will provide directions to handle the situation until you’re back at the dentist’s office. EMERGENCY DENTAL EXAM Unlike a typical exam in which your entire mouth is examined, an emergency exam will only focus on the root of the problem. Your dentist will evaluate the severity and determine the best treatments. They may use anesthetics or sedation for your treatment to numb the affected area and prevent you from enduring more pain.

Time-Saving Benefits Galore
In the last few years, 3D printers have become increasingly mainstream. Originally
invented in the 1980s, only certain industries utilized these printers because they were so expensive. Now,
you can get a 3D printer for less than $10,000, which is amazing because it can make so many things, including furniture, jewelry, and toys. The dental industry has taken advantage of 3D printer technology, and many offices have started to use them to expedite treatments. Before 3D printing became available, if you needed a crown or a bridge at the dentist’s office, it was a time-consuming process. Typically, a patient scheduled a visit for an impression of their teeth, which would then be sent to a lab to be made. It could take weeks for the lab to create the crown or bridge. Once completed, the patient returned to the office so the product could be fitted to their mouth. At that point, if it didn’t fit, the dentist made small adjustments, but anything major would mean sending it back to the lab. Now, because of 3D printing, some offices can even offer same-day treatment. By using an intraoral scanner, the dentist or dental assistant takes a scan of your mouth to create a digital impression of teeth. Then they transfer the impression from the scanner to the 3D printer. Very quickly, the 3D printer creates the crown from a porcelain or ceramic block and is ready for the dentist to seat.
3D printing isn’t used solely for treatments in the dental industry, though. Orthodontic work has also changed due to this technology. Many people have opted for clear aligners in place of braces, and 3D printers create many of the clear aligners people use today. Even better? Using the aligners can shave 6–12 months off the average orthodontic treatment time! There’s no telling how 3D printing will influence the dental industry in the future, but some companies have begun using them to print dentures. Only time will tell if they’ll become as popular as 3D-printed crowns.

CHOOSING THE BEST TOOTHBRUSH Manual vs. Electric Toothbrush
As you make your way down the oral care aisle of your supermarket, you will see various types of toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, and mouth rinses to choose from. Determining which product is best for you and your needs can be overwhelming.
dental exams. We offer impeccable emergency services throughout North Dakota. No matter your issue or how severe it may be, our office is open for same-day appointments. So, don’t panic if a dental emergency occurs; we got you covered!
A common question that’s frequently asked is if you should be using a manual or electric toothbrush. Today, we will be breaking down which brush is right for you. MANUAL TOOTHBRUSHES • Pros: These toothbrushes are easily accessible and can be found at any supermarket. So if you forget your toothbrush or accidentally drop it somewhere and can no longer use it, you can get another one quickly. Manual toothbrushes are also very affordable. • Cons: Since you need to maneuver the toothbrush inside your mouth, you may not reach certain areas. In addition, you may be brushing your teeth too hard, which can hurt gums and teeth. ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSHES • Pros: Electric toothbrushes can remove more plaque on your teeth, gums, and hard-to-reach places because the bristles vibrate and rotate. They also ensure you are spending enough time brushing because some have built-in timers that cut the toothbrush off after a certain time. It’s also great for those with limited mobility, such as carpal tunnel and arthritis. • Cons: While manual toothbrushes are inexpensive and easily accessible, electric toothbrushes are not. Prices for electric toothbrushes can vary depending on the brand you want, and the replaceable brush heads can also be costly. Sometimes it’s difficult to find the replacement you need because some stores may not carry a compatible brand. According to the American Dental Association, both toothbrushes are great for cleaning your teeth and gums and removing plaque. So the toothbrush you choose depends on what’s best for you and your needs. However, if you have questions about what kind of toothbrush to use and other oral care needs, please reach out to your friends at Bismarck Advanced Dental and Implants. We will be happy to help find a solution that works for you.

PUTTING THE ‘WISDOM’ BACK IN ‘WISDOM TEETH’ Scientists Toy With Tooth Regeneration
What if humans could grow teeth to replace damaged or missing ones?
the laser technique can be improved and mass- produced, this could be a minimally invasive treatment option for tooth regeneration. While many more studies are required, the results are promising. Currently, dental implants and bridges serve to literally fill the gap left behind by missing or misaligned teeth. These procedures have become highly effective and provide patients with lasting, healthy smiles. However, if we could regenerate or grow new teeth, we could eliminate the need for these procedures. Right now, we’re still years away from the regrowth options. If you have missing or misaligned teeth, talk to your dental professional about your options. You may not have the ease or genealogical knowledge to grow a new set of pearly whites, but thanks to dental technology improvements, we can create a new smile that functions and looks just like the real thing. Now that’s wise!
Researchers have discovered that people who don’t grow wisdom teeth commonly have a gene labeled as Usag-1, or uterine sensitization- associated gene 1. (Real catchy.) This gene can control tissue growth, which means it can prohibit the generation of extra teeth by producing a protein that inhibits development. In a recent test on ferrets — who have surprisingly human-like teeth — scientists used antibodies to limit the protein production of Usag-1. In doing so, the ferrets who received the antibodies were able to grow more teeth than ferrets without Usag-1 antibodies. In other studies, like a 2014 Harvard study, lasers were used to activate gum tissue to stimulate tooth growth, much like in reptiles and sharks. If
Though they might have “wisdom” in their name, it might seem pretty unwise for our bodies to keep producing this third set of useless molars. However, centuries ago, our ancestors relied on wisdom teeth to gnaw through tough plants and meats. Today, we have meat tenderizers and knives to do the work for us, and wisdom teeth are regularly plucked from our mouths as they grow in.
Some lucky humans don’t grow these “wisdom” teeth, and that evolution has scientists curious:
