On behalf of Dr. Copeland, Dr. Hanna, Dr. Long, and me, welcome to our annual look at the most important medical research and scientific progress from the past year. Once again, we’ve drawn on Stanford Medicine’s year-end review of breakthroughs that hold real promise for improving health, deepening understanding of disease, and expanding the frontiers of care. Below is a curated list of the top medical and scientific advancements identified by Stanford Medicine in 2025. I wish each and every one of you health, wellness, and prosperity! 1. Shingles vaccine may slow dementia’s progress Health records from older adults showed that those who received the shingles vaccine were significantly less likely to develop dementia, suggesting a protective neurological benefit. 2. Neural pain circuitry re-created in a dish Researchers re-created human pain-processing pathways in lab- grown systems, opening new avenues for targeted pain therapies. 3. Immune activation eradicates liver tumors in mice Blocking erythropoietin converted immune-resistant tumors into immune-responsive ones, leading to complete tumor regression in animal models. 4. Genetically engineered skin grafts heal chronic wounds Engineered skin grafts using patients’ own cells dramatically improved healing in individuals with severe genetic skin disorders. 5. Blood test predicts biological ‘brain age’ A novel blood test measuring biological age proved more accurate than chronological age in predicting long-term health outcomes. 6. Gentler stem cell transplant treats genetic disease A chemotherapy-free transplant approach allowed children with Fanconi anemia to successfully receive stem cell therapy with fewer side effects.

FEED YOUR SMILE Vitamin Secrets to a Grin That Shines From Within
The next time you smile, remember that it’s not just about feeling good. It’s also a window into your inner health. When your body gets the vitamins and minerals it needs, you not only feel your best, but your teeth and gums stay healthy, too. Although regular brushing and flossing are essential for good oral health, obtaining proper nutrients is often an overlooked part of a well-rounded dental care routine. So, before you grab your toothbrush tonight, reach for these vitamins that support a stronger, brighter smile. Vitamin D Vitamin D is a powerhouse when it comes to healthy gums and teeth. It helps the body absorb calcium, which fortifies your enamel and jawbone, and also reduces inflammation, a key component of gum disease. Getting enough vitamin D can reduce your chances of gingivitis and periodontitis. Unlike many vitamins, the primary source of D comes from sunlight,
but you can find it in eggs, some dairy products, and oily fish like tuna. Vitamin K2 Adding probiotics to your diet helps your gut naturally produce vitamin K2. You can take probiotic supplements or find this healthy bacteria in foods like yogurt, kimchi, and sauerkraut. Vitamin K2 activates a protein called osteocalcin, which helps your bones, including those in your teeth and jaw, absorb calcium and other essential nutrients. Vitamin C Vitamin C helps keep gums healthy and prevents tooth decay. Gum disease can be serious, but vitamin C can help keep inflammation in check and support the maintenance of strong, healthy gums. You can find vitamin C in many fruits and vegetables, such as broccoli, spinach, bell peppers, cantaloupe, citrus fruits, and tomatoes.
Vitamin A Vitamin A protects and repairs the soft tissues in your mouth, like your gums and the sensitive part of your teeth under the gums. It also plays a vital role in saliva production. If your mouth is too dry, food and bacteria are more likely to build up and cause plaque to form. Try adding carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, or bell peppers to increase your intake of this protective vitamin.
A healthy smile starts within, so feed your grin with vitamin-rich foods.

Smile-Worthy Shopping What to Look for (and Avoid) in Oral Care Products
Daily dental hygiene habits like brushing and flossing are essential to keeping your family’s smiles shining, but not all toothpastes are created equal. Certain ingredients in oral care products can turn healthy grins into grimaces of discomfort. From artificial sweeteners to high levels of harsh alcohol, it’s crucial to read the labels before you leave the dental care aisle. Let’s brush up on the tooth truth and what to look for when restocking your household oral health supplies. Ingredients That Bite Back Overall, most ingredients in oral care products on the store shelves are tested, regulated, and safe. However, always scan the labels because common ingredients have recently raised health concerns. Triclosan, an antibacterial agent used in soaps, has been tied to hormone disruption and can lead to antibiotic resistance. Though it’s not used in toothpaste as much anymore, if you spot it on the label, it’s a red flag. You should also avoid sodium lauryl sulfate, a foaming agent that gives certain toothpastes a lather. It can irritate sensitive mouths and even cause canker sores. As a general rule of thumb, avoid products with many artificial additives like sweeteners and
colors. Likewise, when picking out mouthwash, opt for something with no alcohol or a small amount, as high levels can burn and dry out your mouth. Gummy Green Flags Thankfully, you can find tooth care products that are safe and effective in keeping everyone’s pearly whites bright without any uncomfortable side effects. Look for options that include fluoride, a naturally occurring mineral that helps prevent cavities and strengthen your teeth’s enamel. But ensure your child isn’t swallowing fluoride toothpaste because it should not be ingested in large quantities. Other healthy natural ingredients include aloe vera, vitamin E, and essential oils. If your child struggles with the flavor of toothpaste, seek out options sweetened with xylitol, a natural sugar- free sweetener that’s tasty and fights tooth decay. Choosing oral care products carefully, avoiding harsh additives, and opting for natural ingredients can help make your family’s dental routines something to smile about.
