Wings Over the Platte January 25-June 6, 2026 | StuhrMuseum.org

For more than 30 years, the Wings Over the Platte art show at Stuhr Museum has evolved into one of Nebraska’s signature seasonal exhibitions, linking the region’s cultural life with its rich natural heritage. Returning this spring, 26 curated artists are exhibiting work in a variety of mediums. Visitors can reflect on the Platte River, its skies, and the remarkable wildlife migrations that define central Nebraska. This year’s show features renowned conservation photographer Michael Forsberg and his immersive exhibit, Into Whooperland. The installation brings the extraordinary migration of the endangered whooping crane to life through photography, video displays, and stunning 360-degree imagery. Visitors will see a rare and powerful perspective on one of North America’s most awe- inspiring natural journeys. Forsberg is a Senior Fellow with the International League of Conservation Photographers, co-founder of Platte Basin Timelapse, and a faculty member with IANR at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. His work in the exhibition includes multimedia experiences drawn from his extensive time documenting whooping cranes.

Stuhr Museum 3133 W. Highway 34, 308-385-5316 StuhrMuseum.org

Every museum tells a story, but Stuhr Museum puts you into the story. National publications regularly list it as one of the top places to relive America's past. The 200-acre campus boasts a main building designed by architect Edward Durell Stone; a recreated railroad town with operating homes and businesses; and displays related to prairie life, Native Americans, and early farm equipment. Celebrate holidays with Stuhr Museum. Historic celebrations happen annually for the Fourth of July, Halloween, and Christmas. Its glaciarium (ice skating rink) is popular during the winter holidays.

20

Memorials Caring for those who have lived a life of service for our country and communities has been part of Grand Island's identity since the Nebraska Soldiers and Sailors Home was built in 1887. The 7-acre Grand Island Veterans Cemetery was expanded into a Nebraska Veterans Cemetery, and Veterans Park is seeing improvements as well including the pictured sculpture.

Walking tours Get off the Interstate to see America! Walking tours allow you to engage with your environment, not just zip by it. Grand Island Tourism's guided and digital tours allow you to step back in time and learn about the people who built our city around the transcontinental railroad in the mid-to-late 1800s. Call the Grand Island Tourism office at 308-382-4400 for information on guided tours.

Mormon Trail site Wagon trains traveled through Grand Island and Hall County during the mid-1800s. The pictured sculpture and an information display mark the Townsley-Murdock Trail Site, part of the Mormon Trail. This 2.4-acre prairie on the northwest corner of Guenther and Alda roads that has never been plowed. Wagon ruts (swales) are visible on the site if you look closely.

A short history of Grand Island

P rior to 1700 , approximately 60,000 Pawnee lived throughout what would become the central United States, although disease from Europe soon decimated their numbers. In 1803, the United States bought the land that would become Nebraska from the French — who had claimed it in 1682 — as part of the Louisiana Purchase. From 1840-1870, wagon trains followed the Great Platte River Road through the prairie that would become Grand Island. In 1842, La Grand Isle, the island in the Platte River for which the city is named, was estimated to be 70 miles long with an average width of 1.75 miles. The Nebraska Territory was established in 1854, extending northwest from Kansas up to the Canadian border. Grand Island City was founded in 1857 by 36 German settlers from Iowa. They built cabins out of the few available trees on the prairie. The city was a business venture, speculating the railroad would come through within a few years. The bank supporting the

venture was bankrupted by a financial crisis later that year. However, most of the settlers stayed. Later that year, the Pawnee ceded their remaining land to the government. In 1862, The O.K. Store opened as the first business in Grand Island City and included a post office, stagecoach barn, stockyard, hotel, and a garden. In 1866, the Union Pacific Railroad platted a new Grand Island a few miles west of the original settlement. In 1869, the transcontinental railroad was completed , going through Grand Island and largely bringing a halt to wagon trains. A few years later, the Burlington Railroad also arrived. The city of Grand Island was booming in the 1880s with more than 100 brick buildings and 7,500 residents by 1890. Learn more about the history of the area at Stuhr Museum ( StuhrMuseum.org ), where a living history town and extensive collections share Grand Island's story.

Fabulous Fourth Street Fourth Street in Grand Island is a

collection of cultural experiences central to Grand Island's identity. Restaurants and shops offer food from Guatemala, Cuba, Mexico, and Laos. The rebirth of Grand Island's ethnic festival as the Global Roots Festival will bring the flavors and culture of 59 different countries to Fourth Street in April. But wait, there's more! For piles of really unique antiques, shop at Barn Boy Antiques. Fred's Flying Circus is a one-of-a-kind sculpture display with whimsical cartoon cars. Burlington Station is a historic event space with an adjacent model

railroad display that's open to the public every third Tuesday of the month from 7-8:30p.m.

22

Agriculture Agricultural industry is a part of Grand Island's identity. Get to know it a little better at Raising Nebraska (RaisingNebraska.net), a 25,000-square-foot interactive display highlighting farming and ranching in Nebraska. See the latest ag tech at Husker Harvest Days every September, and visit Fonner Park for periodic livestock shows — including the Nebraska State Fair at the end of August into September.

German heritage The original Grand Island city settlers were German descendents, and it's not hard to see that heritage around town in 2026. Visit the two German clubs: The Platt Duetsche with its bar, ballroom, and baseball fields, or the Liederkranz's vintage bars, courtyard, and bowling alley. And, not surprisingly, Stuhr Museum offers up a lot of local German history, including a German-language church service during its July 4th celebration.

Entertainment district The Grand Island Casino Resort amps up Fonner Park as an entertainment destination. Events such as horse racing, the state fair, and shows at the Heartland Events Center have long drawn people to this sprawling campus. The resort's year-round presence will offer families and gamers opportunities to relax or seek excitement together. The neighboring Island Oasis Water Park adds to the experience, making Fonner Park a great weekend getaway.

Historic Railside downtown Explore Grand Island's historic downtown known as Railside. Shop boutiques and antique stores in this quaint district, where you'll also find a lot of locally-owned restaurants. Self-guided walking tours give you a glimpse into the history of the area, or take you through an annual art exhibit. Night life includes trendy mixed drink establishments, the art deco Grand Theatre and the Oasis Night Club.
