Spring migration Mid-February to early April Experience a world-class wildlife migration up close and in person. More than 1 million sandhill cranes, each standing around 4 feet tall, spend two to three weeks with their family groups on the Platte River in central Nebraska. The peak of the migration is usually the second half of March, and the cranes are joined in the sky by millions of ducks and geese. About 500 endangered whooping cranes pass through the area as well. Guided viewing blind tours are available for the best opportunities to see the most birds, although they aren't necessary to experience the migration first hand.
