Introduction

WhatÕs Old is New

Its a sociological fact that when we enter times of uncertainty, humans tend to

gravitate towards comfort in the familiar. In fashion terms, this plays out with

the reemergence of classic themes, textiles, and silhouettes. For women

specifically, this season is marked by the return of heritage checks, iconic

feminine details, and preppy allusionsÑall tropes rooted in a familiar past.

However, this isnÕt a call to create collections comprised of pure facsimiles.

No, this is about taking those themes, prints, and details and reinterpreting

through a modern lensÑone that looks to subvert old ideas with new contexts

and seeming incongruences. This season, look for ways to pair old ideas with

new. Style futuristic utility tropes along side romantic florals and pussy bows,

or use classic menswear fabrics and shapes to create feminine silhouettes.

The most important thing is to be inspired by the past, but not

to simply recreate it.

Chart Data Looking at last FallÕs new in product mix in the UK, its clear that dresses hold the largest percentage of the mix by a decent margin. However, its is worth noting that out of the top six growth categories, dresses are nowhere to be found. We can then ascertain that although dresses hold steady and remain foundational to a womanÕs wardrobe, opportunities for growth occur in other categories; namely, jumpsuits and trousers.

Market Observations Themes of classic femininity and romanticism were prominent across all level of retailers from Old Navy to the more obvious and directional, Anthropologie. This played out with an abundance of dresses, many of which featured ruffles, checks, folksy prints, and whimsical motifs. Wider pants were also prominent in both drape and more structured iterations, the latter of which often made use of heritage checks. Lastly, while jumpsuits can be challenging all retailers featured at least one style with the utility inspired, boilersuit appearing at trend driven stores such as, H&M and mass market stores such as, Target alike.

AW 18/19 Animal Print Growth in UK

Chart Data Animal prints have been trending for some time as trend-led retailers saw a massive spike in growth within their assortments. However, the growth for both mid / mass and value retailers is of greater significance. While the most cutting edge collections may have hit a plateau, at the mass market level, there is still room for growth, especially in regards to a wider variety of prints beyond the ubiquitous leopard. Also of note is excellent full price sell through for garments featuring check prints with woven tops, dresses, and skirts all seeing significant YoY increases.

Market Observations Indeed, animal prints were still featured heavily at many retailers, but did not dominate the sales floor like last Spring. Where we did see animal prints, leopard was still champ (especially at stores aimed at classic ladies), but tiger stripes and snake prints were also highly visible. Fall florals, adorned dresses and worked well with the clear themes of romantic femininity that also made use of high sheen finishes and airy chiffons. Checked shirts were a staple across all retailers with everyone offering a flannel. And, checks were also extremely prominent on all bottomsÑboth skirts and trousers.

Introduction

Classics are updated, yet remain recognizable

In times of uncertainty, people tend to look towards the familiar for a sense of

comfort and safety. In fashion terms, this plays out with the reemergence of

classical topes, ideas, patterns, and silhouettes. And, although in some ways

menswear is more vast, varied and progressive than ever before, typical

masculine themes such as prep, military/utility, the great outdoors, and even

business attire all are prevalent in the current mode of design and dressing.

Heritage checks are everywhere from mass market retailers to catwalk

presentations. Corduroy, a textile almost synonymous with autumnal comfort

is in wide use across multiple categories.

Yet, this isnÕt a moment to simply recreate the past. Instead, look for ways to

reinvigorate and revitalize the classic ideas through juxtaposed contexts,

subversion, and current fabrications. Sure, there is comfort in the past, but

also look to explore the hope of the future.

Chart Data

Market Observations

AW 19/20 New-In Colors Growth YoY

Looking at the current seasonÕs catwalk statistics in regard to pants should make one this abundantly clear: a smarter style of menÕs dressing is on the rise. Although catwalk stats have little immediate bearing on mass market retail, they can be used as a way to gauge a general temperature. And, while track pants and other athleisure styles may not have the same high fashion saturation as a few years ago, they are certainly still viable and relevant at retail. However, when talking about newness and updates, its vital that we consider how to incorporate the progressive into the familiar. Also, looking at the color spectrum for the season, its clear that rich natural tones, which play so well with the heritage inspired, smarter looks are coming to vogue. This creates a compelling story and a strong, yet approachable direction for the season.

While blues, blacks, and neutrals dominated the racks at most retailers, it was the supplemental tones such as earthy browns, deep greens, and burnt oranges that really made the color stories pop. These shades ran through flannels, made up chino assortments, and were featured on corduroy, which every retailers, without exception offered in one for or another. As for trousers, pleats were still kept to a minimum and only really available at more trend driven retailers. However, tailored pants on the whole were on display everywhere. While many retailers opted for the slim silhouette thatÕs become so popular over the years, retailers like Uniqlo, H&M, and Target all offered more relaxed silhouettes often featuring tech materials and althleisure details like drawstrings. The final product felt like a smart update to the jogger.

Introduction

One season, two major themes

When talking about boyÕs clothing in terms of trends, it can be challenging to

really pinpoint and seismic shifts. Pants may get tighter or looser, but for the

most part, come fall, there will be flannel shirts, cargo pants, and denim. Yet,

this season, there are two clear cut thematic trends pushing the design

direction. The first trend is the 1970Õs. Plush corduroy textiles in earth tones,

spice colored twills, and retro printed shirts all come back to us through a

nostalgic, sepia-toned lens. The other theme pushing the seasonÕs narrative

is one that is comprised of three related partsÑutility, function, and the great

outdoors. This theme plays out through the return to relaxed cut cargo pants,

modular heavyweight flannels and overshirts, and patchwork construction.

4

Chart Data Its not easy being green may be KermitÕs mantra, but when it comes to boyÕs apparel, green is on the rise all over the globe. While browns, oranges and other earth tones are all showing significant increases in multiple categories, its Green that has shown the most consistent growth and is making up the the most significant percentages in the color mix (US outerwear 11% of mix, UK trousers 12% of mix). So, while blacks and blues maintain the largest portion of the mix, its green that is making a strong showing this season. Perhaps its the utility and outdoors trends that are fueling the influx of green garmentsÑafter all, both themes make heavy use of several shades of green. Or, perhaps its the massive spike in the use of corduroy, which after shades of brown uses green more than any other color, that is causing green to make such as strong showing. Regardless of the reason, its clear that green is going to be a big part of AW 20/21.

Market Observations Green was indeed present from many retailers and could be seen in the ongoing use of camouflage prints as well as in corduroy trousers and plaid shirts. Primaries too were quite visible especially in woven shirt assortments with plaids making use of multiple primary colors including the popular green simultaneously. Pants came in the typical assortment of blue, black, and khaki which were typically supplemented with engaging spice tones such as cinnamon browns and turmeric golden yellows. Overarching themes were a bit less obvious for boys, but a mix of 70Õs retro, outdoor adventure, and military utility were are on display across retailers ranging from European trend led retailers like, Zara to US staples like Old Navy and The Gap.
