We have a new addition to our PT Team! Meet Dr. Michelle Komrower! I was born in Fairfax, Virginia and after moving to Ohio and then Michigan, my family eventually settled in Columbia, Maryland, where I grew up. Having participated in a wide variety of sports including swimming, Tae Kwon Do, cheerleading, and softball, I became fascinated by the human body and it’s amazing capabilities. So, I decided to pursue a career in physical therapy.

After graduating from Atholton High School in 2007, I spent a year working and taking college classes in Israel before returning for undergrad. I attended the University of Maryland and received my Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Kinesiology in 2011. I worked full-time as a physical therapist aide and then moved overseas for some ‘life’ experience in 2013. I continued my path towards physical therapy at the University of Melbourne in Australia, and graduated with my Doctor of Physical Therapy in 2017.

WHAT’S GOING ON AROUND ATLAS PT? After graduation I worked as the primary physical therapist at a nursing home in Melbourne helping residents reduce pain, optimize their movement/function and improve their quality of life. In 2019, I moved back to the US and started working in the outpatient orthopedic setting. I have since developed a passion for treating orthopedik conditions, with a strong focus on exercise, manual therapy and the mind-body connection. I will soon be pursuing further certifications in Trigger Point Dry Needling and Strength and Conditioning. I am passionate about teaching people about their bodies so they (continued from outside)

can stay happy, healthy and continue doing what they love. My free time is usually spent hiking or mountain biking with my dog Odin, traveling to National Parks, working out, listening to audiobooks or seeing live music. I am excited to continue to grow as a therapist with the Atlas Physical Therapy Team. From Laura: Our baby is a Jack-O-Lantern! At 6 1/2 years old, she’s now missing 3 top teeth. We just love her smile, and she’s able to eat most of the food she normally does.

From TJ: TJ and Laura had a fun quarantine project of making their own German Apfelwein. We used it as a chemistry project for the girls e-learning too. Teaching them about yeast, sugar, fermentation, carbonation, measurements, and pressure. Laura’s grandfather used to make his own Hard Cider and we decided years ago after he passed away to continue the tradition. We try to make a batch every year that is ready for fall! It’s very simple to make with only 4 ingredients; apple juice, corn sugar, yeast, and patience.

Since January I’ve been writing the book I’ve wanted to write for a few years. It’s called Pregnancy Pain: Fix Your Pain and Become the Boss of Your Body, Tips and Tricks from a Physical Therapist and Mother. During my time home this spring, I was able to put more time into finishing the draft. By the 3rd week of September I got a sneak peek. I got to hold the proof copy of the book in my hands. I still think I’m in shock that it’s here! Stay tuned for info on how to get this book when it’s published in October

Tasty Recipe

SPICED OATMEAL AND APPLE BARS

INGREDIENTS • Cooking spray • 2 1/2 cups old-fashioned oats • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour • 1 tsp baking powder • 2 large apples, peeled, cored, and finely chopped • 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

• 1/4 tsp salt • 1 cup apple cider • 1/2 cup packed dark brown sugar

• 1 large egg, beaten • 3 tbsp butter, melted • 2 tsp vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a 9x13-inch baking pan with parchment paper and coat paper with the cooking spray. In a medium bowl, combine the oats, flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt. Add the apples to a large bowl with the apple cider, brown sugar, egg, butter, and vanilla. Stir to combine. To large bowl, slowly stir in dry ingredients until incorporated. Transfer mixture to baking pan. Place another sheet of parchment on top of mixture and press down firmly into an even layer and into corners. Remove top piece of parchment. Bake 30–35 min., until golden brown. Let cool and use parchment paper to lift from the pan. Cut into 16 bars and store in a sealed container.

“Began with moments of nagging pain that would wake me or keep me up at night. Dr. Sam found major pressure points that really improved my mobility and decreased my level of pain. He knew right where to work for fast results. He discovered my range of motion was very limited and gave me workout guidance to do on my own that has drastically improved my level of pain. I’m so glad I found Atlas on Facebook and will keep working to make Dr. Sam proud and get back to 100%. Thank you very much!” — Dean D.
