49 MIDDLE EAST. Israel’s aggression at Gaza, 28 Feb. 1955.

Operation Black Arrow was part of an intensification of tensions between Egypt and Israel resulting from Egypt’s occupation of the Gaza Strip and attendant support for the Palestinian cause. The action of 28 February 1955 contributed to Egypt’s nationalization of the Suez Canal and blockade of the Gulf of Aqaba. The operation itself was in response to the Egyptian sponsorship of Palestinian operations against Israel from Gaza; 150 paratroopers attacked an Egyptian military base near the city, killing 38 Egyptian soldiers. Operation Black Arrow was the first of a number of damaging Israeli raids against Egypt in Gaza throughout 1955. These events would in turn contribute to Israel’s invasion of the Sinai Peninsula in 1956.
