rich cultural heritage. Sections on recipes, Arabic vocabulary and useful retail outlets complete this attempt to promote Saudi Arabia as a vibrant and welcoming tourist destination. This mission now lives on in the Saudi Tourism Authority’s Vision 2030 plan to reach 55 million international visitors per year by the end of the decade and make tourism worth ten percent of GDP. Alkhobar: International Publications Agencies, [c.1971] First edition, first printing, of this uncommon, locally produced guide capturing a moment of historic change in the Gulf, with both Bahrain and Qatar having recently declared independence and discussions about the formation of the future UAE ongoing. WorldCat records copies in just three institutions outside the US. Salah Said’s guide notes that visitors to the Gulf states “will witness for themselves the fusion of a magnificent past that meets with the most vital forces of modern life” (p. 5). In sections on each state, he records important political, historical and economic information, as well the state of culture, education and the media. Octavo.
