The Catholic District School Board of
Eastern Ontario continues to develop
Aboriginal education initiatives.
At a recent meeting, trustees heard from
Superintendent of School Effectiveness, Marg
Shea-Lawrence, and Teacher Coach Bonnie
Levesque, who presented a summary of the
board’s Aboriginal Education initiatives.
”Our board is bringing awareness of

Aboriginal traditions to the classroom by
enhancing existing programs, creating new
resources through partnerships, such as the
Eastern Ontario Catholic Curriculum
Cooperative and Aboriginal community
partners, and by offering native studies
courses at the secondary level for all
students,” said Shea-Lawrence.

teachers. “I work closely with our staff and
community partners to help improve student
achievement through the lens of Aboriginal
awareness.”
Aboriginal experiences are also being
organized for students to promote an
increased awareness of the rich histories,
cultures, and perspectives of First Nation,
Métis, and Inuit peoples.

Visits from elders, performance artists,
authors and other guest speakers bring
Aboriginal culture to life in our classrooms.
“First Nation, Métis, and Inuit students’ self-
esteem is enhanced by building strong
positive partnerships with the Aboriginal
communities and organizations,” said
Levesque. “They take pride in sharing their
culture.”

New resources, such as a web channel
featuring lessons about Aboriginal role
models, are being piloted. A workshop for
teachers highlighting social justice issues,
and social action in response to Aboriginal
issues, has been proposed to the EOCCC for
its annual conference in April.
