King's Business - 1938-07

SEPT EM BER • 1938

Fifteen cents a copy, $1.25 a year in U. S.

To become workmen that need not to be ashamed, “rightly dividing the word of truth,” several hundred young men and women are again turning happy faces toward the Bible Institute of Los Angeles. On Septem ber 6, 1938, Biola gratefully will welcome new and returning students to this institution “dedicated unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood” and preserved by His own glorious power.

Going to College...

Is Serious Business “PRAY FOR MY SON. He is in Blank University.” That is what a mother said to a minister recently. “What right had you to put your son in that type of institution and then ask people to pray that he will not be affected by his environment?” the minister inquired. A scholarly young man who was graduated from the Bob Jones College said, after attending three graduate schools, “If it had not been for the four years’ training I had at the Bob Jones College, I could not have resisted the subtle influence of my graduate professors.” The spiritual morale of young people just ou t o f high s ch o o l is bound to go down under the constant bombardment of the instructors in many colleges and universities. You parents owe it to your children to direct them to an o rth od ox , Christian college, especially fo r th e first years o f th eir training. Remember, a degree from the greatest university in the world is a poor substitute for the loss of Christian faith. Parents can put their sons and daughters in the Bob Jones College and go to sleep at night in peace, knowing that their children are s a fe spiritually and knowing at the same time that they have as g o o d edu cational advan tages as can b e fou n d in any o th er institution. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED , either as a parent or prospective student, in a college with high educational standards, an institution which stands without apology for the “old-time religion” and for the absolute authority of the Bible, and an institution which puts first things first, write for literature to DR. BOB JONES, JR., Acting President, BOB JONES COLLEGE, Cleveland, Tenn. ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

★ Piano, Speech, Violin, Voice, and Pipe Organ given without additional cost. Business college and fully accredited high school in connection.

BIBLE INSTITUTE Opens Sept. 6, 1938 Great Praise Service Announced tute students secure employment to enable them to care for at least a part of their expenses. Educational Department K enneth M. D ear Friends o f B iola : The Lord willing, three memorable services of thanksgiving will be held in the Church of the Open Door on Sunday, Septem ber 11, 1938, at which the papers representing the second mort gage against the Institute will be burned publicly. To the church and the world, this action will indicate a great victory which the Lord has wrought, and will make possible the Institute’s opening its fall term on schedule, Tuesday, September 6. When it became known, a few weeks ago, that the payment of $25 ,000 .00 cash would cancel an indebtedness of some $ 7 0 0 ,0 0 0 .0 0 against the Bible Institute, the Lord’s people quickly responded to Him and sent in more than the required amount— in fact, at this writing, $37 ,000 .00 has been received. In a miraculous way, the payment of this sum not only saved the Insti tute buildings for the Institute’s use at a time at which they seemed likely to be lost, but also constituted a GREAT FORWARD STEP toward the complete liberation of the school from the vast, de pressing debt burden under which it has been laboring for years. On September 11, in the presence of thousands of prais ing and praying friends, we will rejoice in what the Lord has BEGUN to do, and trust Him together for the meeting of pressing current needs and every other Institute obligation. The article, “Breaking the Log Jam,” appearing in this issue on pages 291-294, presents the situation clearly. Will you not read it, pray over it, and act as the Lord directs? Faithfully yours,

U NDER the blessing of God, the Bible Institute of Los Angeles, Incorpo rated, begins its thirtieth year as a Bible training school, on Tuesday, Septem ber 6, 1938. Holding true to the principles of the honored founders, the Institute opens its general, three-year courses to all, irrespec tive of previous academic preparation. The preliminary work which has been done in connection with the degree courses which the Institute offers has met with hearty re sponse on the part of many students. This fall marks the beginning of the fourth year of advanced work, and plans are being formulated to make the degree courses of increasing value to qualified students. The Institute makes no charge for tuition, but is dependent upon God’s provision, through His stewards, for the meeting of day-by-day needs. All questions concern ing the need and expenditure of contribu tions will be received gratefully and an swered gladly, if addressed to Elmer J. Peterson, Business Manager, 558 South Hope St., Los Angeles, Calif.

Around the King's Table By PAUL W. ROOD

also has a responsibility. Many a church is hindered because of the attitude of some or many of its members toward the pastor. His morale is broken by the opposition or indifference of his members. W e may ask: W hat is the responsibility of a church member toward his pastor? In putting the question, we are taking for granted that the pastor is a man of God with a call from God and a message for God. W e are thinking of a spiritually minded, orthodox, and evangelistic pastor. It is the duty of every member of the church to pray daily for the pastor. He has a difficult and important task. He needs the prayers of all his people. They can pray him into a blessed and powerful ministry. A praying church will have a fruitful min istry. But prayer must be persistent. Satan does not mind how much believers labor in prayer for a few days, or weeks, or months, if at last he can bring discouragement and cause their intercession to cease. The pas tor needs continual prayer. The church member should speak well of his pastor. Sometimes a father, speaking in the presence of his children, will criticize his pastor, and then will wonder that the children are not influenced by the pastor s ministry. Moreover, if church members would speak kindly of the pastor to out siders, many would be influenced to come to church. The pastor should be encouraged by his members. If you have been helped by his sermon, why not tell him that you have? W hy not write him a letter, telling him what he has meant to you and your fam ily? Your commendation might make him a better preacher. Most ministers have plenty of discouragements, and a few encourage ments would be a blessing to them. If your pastor is true to the Lord and His Word, will you not strengthen his hands by your enthusiastic cooperation? Changsha Bombed! Following one of the worst bombing raids of the present Sino-Japanese con flict, and just as this issue was about to go to press, a cablegram dated August 18, 1938, was received from Charles A. Rob erts, Treasurer of the Hunan Bible Institute, Changsha, Hunan, China, reading as fol lows: “C hangsha B ombed . I nstitute U n touched . C hristian R efugee H ospital C ollapsed . P atients M oved I nstitute D ormitory .” This brief communication should be an urgent call to prayer to every Christian interested in Biola in China.

thousands of individuals are thereby brought under the influence of the Word. Bible Institutes are training hundreds of young people every year to become mis sionaries and soul-winners, on foreign fields and in the homeland. The Bible has been translated into more than a thousand languages and dialects, and is now avail able to more people than ever before. Bible classes are being held in churches, halls, and homes, and multitudes are studying the Word. Young people by the thousands are volunteering for missionary work. The lay men’s movement is being used of God to bring souls to Christ. The radio is enab ling evangelistic speakers to reach thou sands where formerly they could reach mere hundreds, and millions where hereto fore only thousands could be brought under the sound of their message. Child evan gelism is becoming a nation-wide spiritual movement. Never before in our day have we seen so many people with a burden for the salvation of children as are being en listed in this cause today. The World’s Christian Fundamentals Association is ag gressively seeking to stir the hearts of Bible-believing Christians in America (of whom estimates indicate that there are twen ty million), who have not “bowed the knee to Baal” but who are, in a true sense, funda mentalists. In these consecrated individ uals and groups is all the "material” needed for the greatest spiritual lire in the history of mankind. In the power of the Holy Spirit, prayer, zeal, and faith will kindle the flame. Let us expect God to work. Let us pray the prayer of the psalmist: "It is time for thee, Lord, to work: for they have made void thy law” (Psa. 119:126). Let us dare to believe God. What is Your Duty Toward Your Pastor? Many years ago, a striking cartoon ap peared in a publication now out of print called T h e R am s Horn. In the drawing, a wagon represented the church. The preacher was standing where the horse usually stands. He was pulling the wagon, and perspiration was rolling down his his cheeks. The members of the church were sitting on top of the wagon, and some were complaining that the seats were un comfortable. Some of the deacons were holding the wheels while the preacher was pulling, and thus no progress was made. This cartoon illustrated vividly a situa tion that is too often prevalent in a church. Many church members realize that it is the preacher’s business to pray and preach and work, and they forget that each member

Are the Days of Revival Over? Frequently during the last few years statements have been made by preachers and writers that the days of revival are over. The argument presented is that the apostasy is now so far advanced that there is no possibility of revival. The effect of this teaching has been a hopeless and pes simistic attitude among many Christian workers. “W hat’s the use?” is the answer often given when Christians are urged to pray for revival. W hy should any one take this fatalistic position and presume to decide how or when God should work? W ho are we to declare that revivals are no longer to be expected? Does God no longer act in re sponse to believing prayer? It is obvious that if Christians constantly are told that the situation is hopeless, they will cease to pray believingly in expectation of great things from God. There have been other periods in the history of the church when the outlook has been very dark, but in many of these pe riods of seeming hopelessness, some one has been enabled to take hold of the prom ises of God by faith and to pray prevailing ly—and revival has come. WTiy should it be thought incredible that what God has done before He can do again? The difficulty is not with God. The Word of God is clear: “Behold, the Lord s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear” (Isa. 59:1, 2 ). The difficulty is with us. Finney used to say that any community could have a revival if God’s people in that community would pay the price of a re vival. God is still on the throne. Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. The Holy Spirit is still in the world. The Word of God is still sharper than any two- edged sword. The gospel is still the power of God unto salvation. Then why should there be gloom and discouragement? W hy should we not, rather, allow God to do what He wants to do through a surrendered and believing people? There are at least eight movements or trends that indicate that the greatest revival this world has ever seen is possible, and, let us say it with emphasis, probable. Among these encouraging signs is the sum mer conference movement. Bible confer ences are being held in all parts of the land, and the Word of God is faithfully taught and preached in these gatherings. Many

The Meaning of Discipleship

By H ARO LD SPURGEON Illustration by Ransom D. Marvin

"And he, casting aw ay his garment, sprang up, and cam e to Jesus" (Mk. 10: 50, R .V .). I T W A S a spring day, but probably it was a spring day with a cold nip. in the air, for the blind beggar who sat by the roadside outside the city walls had wrapped around himself his cloak. There he sat, pursuing his accustomed calling, that of begging for alms from the passers- by. That old coat of his was probably much the worse for wear, and although it represented almost all that he possessed in the world, yet something happened that day in the life of that man that caused him to throw aside the only thing he had. W e read that “casting away his garment, [he] sprang up, and came to Jesus.” There is symbolism in that act, for if we would come to Christ we must cast away that which we possess. That is the message that I want to drive home. There can be no real coming to Christ that is not accompan ied by a casting away. There must be things in our lives left behind if we would follow Him. And Christ is calling us to follow Him. As God shall help me, my task is to try to help you hearken to that divine Voice. Humiliation before Christ Let me point out, first of all, that Chris tian discipleship implies humility. If we are to come to Christ, we must cast off the garments of our self-complacency; there must be a humbling of ourselves. W e must be brought down if we are to be lifted up. I cannot help thinking that even in the case of blind Bartimeus there was a certain de gree of self-complacency, and that a cer tain amount of humiliation had to be expe rienced by him. He had probably been blind for many years, and had become used to that condition; perhaps he was even complacent about it. Day by day he had sat by the wayside begging, and when Jesus passed that way, Bartimeus probably never imagined for a moment that any change in his circumstances was going to [T his sermon was preached in the Met ropolitan T abernacle, London, by the grandson o[ Charles H addon Spurgeon.]

take place. And how true all this is spiritually! There was a time when you were blind; in fact, you did not want to see. There was a time when you were poverty-strick en, and you had no use for the riches of Christ. That is the tragedy of the unsaved. It is at the mo

whether Bartimeus needed to learn this les son. He probably had his plans, but on this particular day they were all changed. He left his old cloak behind by the side of the road, and he went forth into a new life to follow Christ. That is a lesson we, too, must learn. When Christ comes into the life of a man or woman, He comes to take command; we have to learn to follow Him. The trouble is that we are so busy making our own plans that we have no time to stop and listen to His voice. But blind Bartimeus was ready to obey the Lord, and was willing to be taught by Him. There was only one memento of the great thing that had happened in the life of Bartimeus that day; it was the old ragged coat lying by the roadside, for the man who had own ed that coat had gone on his way rejoicing, following Jesus in the way. Used by Chrisf But there is still another quality in the life of discipleship; it is that of utility. W e must be useful in the Lord’s service. W e must be ready to cast away the garment of futile ineffectiveness. Christ lays hold of our lives that He may use them. You remember those well-known words in the Epistle to the Hebrews: “Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us” (1 2 :1 ), that is, the sin that so easily wraps us round. That gar ment that wraps us round so easily, and that trips up our feet, that must go; that garment of some cherished sin must be laid aside if we are to serve God worthily. If you go to God in sincerity, He will show you what it is that is coming between you add Him. It may be one thing; it may be many things. If God tells you that that thing must go, then let it go. And if you know that there is something in your life [Continued on p a g e 319]

ment that a man becomes discontented, when his conscience begins to trouble him, that there is hope for him. So in the life of blind Bartimeus there came one day this unexpected happening. He heard an unusual noise; there was a buzz of excitement that he had never been conscious of before. Perhaps in idle cur iosity he asked what it was all about, and he was told that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. He must have known that name; and suddenly there dawned within him the realization of the great gulf that lay between what he was, and what, by the mercy of God, he might yet become; and his whole attitude toward life was changed in a moment. The presence of Christ had brought home to him his own appalling need and the wonderful possibility of re covery, and he cried out, "Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me.” How differently we look at life when we see ourselves as we really are in the sight of our Creator! Then all that we can do is to cast aside all our self-complacency and self-satisfaction, and to cry to God for mercy. It may be humbling, but it must be done if we are to escape from sin’s penalty at the last. W e come to Him and seek His pardon because we see ourselves as we really are in His sight; and we are con scious of that which awaits us unless we cast ourselves unreservedly and uncondi tionally upon His abundant mercy. Taught of Christ But humility is only the first step; there must come also docility. The true disciple is one who is willing to be taught. W e are often very loath to regard docility as a necessary qualification for discipleship. W e are not willing to take Christ’s yoke upon us, and to learn of Him. I do not know

Russia and Armageddon l By LOU IS S. B A UM A N * Long Beach, California

M UN ITION factories of all nations are working far overtime to fulfill literally the prophecy of God’s Word that the sun of Gentile dominion will set in pools of blood in which horses will plunge to their bridles’ bits. For the judg ments of God will be such as offended Deity never before permitted to fall upon a god less world, and never will let fall again as the eternal years roll on. Our Lord Him self assures us of this fact: "Then shall be great tribulation, such as w as not since the beginning o f the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved” (Matt. 24:21, 22). Men today may sneer at the possibility that they stand face to face with sorrows such as not even the Egyptians passed through in the days of Moses, nor the Nephalim met with in the days of Noah, nor the Sodomites experienced in the days of Lot. Nevertheless, their sneer is only another evidence that the situation is even so. When "Lot went out, and spake unto his sons-in-law, . . . and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city . . . he seemed as one that mocked [lit., ‘babbled like one gone insane’] unto his sons-in-law” (Gen. 19:14). And, "As it was in the days of L o t. . . thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is re vealed” (Lk. 17:28, 30). Mobilization in the East It seems that there is scarcely a spot on the face of all the earth today whereon

The Northern Alliance The prophet Daniel, in his great delinea tion of the events that will bring the war of Armageddon to its climax, sees the Anti christ going forth “conquering and to con quer” (Rev. 6:2; cf. Dan. 11:36, 41-43) until the “king of the south” (Dan. 11:40) is overthrown and “the precious things of Egypt” (Dan. 11:43) shall become Anti christ’s. Then it is that "tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him: . . . [and] he shall go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly to make away many” (Dan. 11:44). It is apparent that it is a great north eastern federation, the last vast amassment of cannon fodder for the guns of the world’s coming super-Caesar. What possible "tid ings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble” this Satanically energized superman? The news could be nothing save that the legions of the "king of the north” (Dan. 11:40) [which can only be Russia, even “Gog . . . the chief prince of Meshech, and Tubal”—Moscow and Tobolsk (Ezek. 38:2, R. V . margin) ] are mobilizing to gether with his eastern allies, for a march “to the land of unwalled villages . . . to take a spoil . . . upon the people that are gathered out of the nations . . . [even] my people of Israel” (Ezek. 38:11-16). There has been considerable confusion as to just what peoples will make up this great northeastern federation of nations whose allied hosts shall swoop down "upon the people that are gathered out of the na tions” at the time of the end. It is certain, however, that Russia will be the heart and soul of that great godless federation.

warlike forces are not on the march for the complete fulfillment of the words of the prophets of God, spoken centuries, yea mil lenniums, ago. The Seer of Patmos beheld the drying up of "the great river Euphra tes . . . that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared . . . [to join] . . . the kings of thè earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle [R. V., ‘war’] of that great day of God Almighty... [even the war of] Armageddon” (Rev. 16: 12-16). For when “the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David” (Rev. 5:5) “shall roar out of Zion” (Joel 3:16; cf. Rev. 19: 11 ) to meet the challenge of “the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him” (Rev. 19:19), then Russia, China, and Japan must be there, together with “all the people of the earth” (Zech. 12:3), for that conflict. Thus the 400,000,000 pacifist inhabitants of old China are certain to be aroused wholly out of their drowsy sleep of ages, and to be made thoroughly war-minded. Nations do not march to Armageddon un less they are war-minded. If China’s four hundred millions—being practically one- fourth of the inhabitants of the earth— should have slept on, how then could the word through the prophet have been ful filled: "I will gather all nations against Jeru salem to battle” (Zech. 14:2)? Verily, the Chinese dragon is aroused today; and it be came the folly of Japan to prod with the bayonet and to let fall the bomb that has stirred him to a frenzy. And when the guns of Armageddon roar, the five-clawed dra gon will be there.

The Authorized Version’s rendering of Ezekiel 38:5 causes a good deal of confu sion by naming “Ethiopia” and “Libya” as being in this federation. It is confusion of names, not of facts. The "Ethiopia” and "Libya” known to the world today as Afri can territory will be opposed to this north eastern alliance. Their battle-flags will fly over the ranks of the Antichrist. But the “Ethiopia” and “Libya” of Ezekiel’s proph ecy will belong to the northeastern federa tion. The Revised Version gives us light: “Persia, Cush, and Put with them” (Ezek. 38:5, R. V .). “Cush” was within the con fines of southern Persia: and “Put” is upper Silicia. These peoples shall march with the allied hordes of the King of the North. "Togarmah” (v. 6 )— the Turkoman tribes of Central Asia—will march under the standard of this King of the North. “Gomer, and all his hordes” (v. 6) like wise will flaunt banners with the banners of the King of the North. The best authori ties on the subject inform us that, beyond almost every peradventure of a doubt, Gomer” is none other than Germany. If this conclusion is correct, the present alli ance between Hitler and Mussolini is to be short-lived. As a matter of fact, the recent billing and cooing between Mussolini and Hitler is -exceedingly unpopular with the masses of the Italian people. The recent fifty-million-dollar banquet that Mussolini is reported as staging in Italy for Hitler, so far as the Italians were concerned, was only a matter of eating crow. W e predict that those two bedfellows—Mussolini and Hitler—will never get through the night in the same bed— the Fascist bed. A light is going to start in that bed, and it will not be Mussolini who will hit the floor! A very much aggrieved nation will find herself hungry enough to eat humble pie, and Russia will furnish the pie. A very striking article, of intense interest to the prophetic student, appeared in the Liberty magazine for July 30, 1938. Its subject is “W ill Stalin and Hitler Join Hands to Rule the World?” The author is Princess Catherine Radziwill. She recently has had two meetings with Stalin, and she writes from close personal knowledge. She says: “The Joseph Stalin of today is no Bolshevik . . . . Nor do I think I shall be much astonished when, one day not far hence, ‘enemies’ Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler decide, publicly, to shake hands.” The Princess’ article gives some very good reasons for her statement. Those who know the “sure word of prophecy” expect nothing less than that some day in the not far distant future, the seeming enemy na tions, Russia and Germany, will shake hands, whether Stalin and Hitler do or not. Ancient Rome Restored The Scriptures cannot be broken. Neither Germany nor Japan was ever a part of the old Roman Empire. Any alliance between Germany on the one hand and Italy on the other is an alliance that cannot stand. The bombs of Japan have awakened countless millions. And China is being driven, even against her will, far into the waiting arms of the great Russian Bear. The vast hordes of western Asia are pass ing into the same arms. The Communistic

forces are creeping close together in the dusk of our age. And they are growing more and more war-minded each passing hour. Tremendous events are at hand. England, France, Spain, and Greece, as well as other modern nations whose terri tories were once within the confines of the old Roman Empire, must be brought by war or by diplomacy to march under the standards of the new Roman Empire. Bloody indeed will be that day when these allied multitudes of the Roman "prince that shall come” (Dan. 9:26) shall meet the al lied forces of "the prince of Rosh” (Ezek. 38:2, R. V .). On that battlefield it will be determined whether the final form of man’s misgovernment upon the earth is to be Fas cist or Communist. Those two political ideals never can dwell together in peace upon an earth all of whose affairs have be come so closely interwoven as in these last days. When the smoke of that battle roils away, all that will be left of the Communist armies will be one vast entombed bone pile “in the valley of Hamon-gog” (Ezek. 39: 15). Spectre on the Horizon Possibility of future alignment of Ger many with Russia is seen by M. W. Fodor, the experienced Vienna Corre spondent of the “Manchester Guardian,” in his recent book, “Plot and Counter plot in Central Europe” : The most important people in the Ger man General Staff still follow Bismarck- ian precepts and believe in the possibility of a military co-operation between Rus sia and Germany. Naturally, as long as Adolf Hitler is the master of Germany, or at least until he has reversed his policy, this idea of the army is hardly realizable. But it would be a mistake to dismiss it as impossible. Everybody realizes, however, that even if the Rome-Berlin axis does work for some time, it cannot be a sufficient support for the German army. Italy is a poor c o u n tr y , la c k in g all the raw materials that Germany needs . . . What if the two major dictatorial Powers, Germany and Russia, make up their feud? Many augurs, with the safe instinct of illogical people, see the spectre of this German-Russian friendship looming on the horizon. Whether the spectre which looms on the horizon will become a reality depends on many factors. Can Hitler change so suddenly as to permit such a policy? Or can Stalin overcome his distrust of the Third Reich? O r is anybody else whose figure looms behind the scenes going to force the change? One never can tell in advance . . . {[From Plot and Counterplot in Central Europe, by M. W. Fodor. H oughton M if flin Co., Boston. Copyright, 1937, by Mar cel IV. Fodor. Used by special permission.'} Russia and her mortal enemy Austria made up a bitter feud in 1903 . . .

Then the world’s last Caesar, the might iest monarch Satan ever placed in command of his legions on earth, “shall plant the tab ernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain” (Dan. 11:45). There, at the geographical “navel of the earth’ (Ezek. 38:12, R. V . margin), shall he set himself to reign over the whole earth, and doubtless will blasphemously assume the title, “K ing of K ings , and L ord of L ords .” J he Final Overthrow of Antichrist Yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him” (Dan. 11:45). And his end shall come when, in a fit of the most com plete madness of which any monarch was ever guilty, he shall march all the legions at his command against the last human beings on the face of the earth who shall then be left to lift up a standard against him. He shall march his armies out for the final destruction of the Jew and the city of the Jew. That will be “the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem” (Zech. 12:2). Already, over the whole earth, the tides of anti-Semitism are rising higher and higher. Blind are they who un derstand not the meaning of it all. Deaf, indeed, are the ears that hear not and heed not the warning of the Almighty speaking from the heavens: In that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it” (Zech. 12:3). The Seer of Patmos beheld it all, as the God who sees the end from the beginning placed the vision before him: “And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought mira cles before him, with which he de ceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of lire burning with brim stone. And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh” (Rev. 19:19-21). Thus shall pass away, as chaff from the threshing floor, all the vaunted glory of man—glory that shall come to its crown ing point in the superman who in himself will combine all the glory of Nebuchadnez zar, and Cyrus, and Alexander, and Caesar. And with the passing of the glory of man there will pass also the glory of Satan, for in that day the supreme head of all the foes of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ shall be garlanded with chains, and left to wallow at the bottom of the abyss. And then shall He reign “whose right it is” (Ezek. 21:27). And He “shall break in pieces the oppressor . . . In his days shall the righteous flourish: and abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth . . . And men shall be blessed in him: all na tions shall call him blessed” (Psa. 72-4 7, 17).
