make an image or picture of what they think God looks like, and they worship this likeness. God says we are not to do this. "Thou shalt have no other gods be fore me,” He says. Even in the days when the command ments were first given, people made im ages to worship. In the time when the Lord Jesus Christ, God’s Son, was here on earth, people worshiped idols. And today in heathen countries people worship idols, too. God says, "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image . . . thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them.” W e are to worship no one but the living and all-powerful God. Perhaps you are thinking to yourself that you do not worship idols. But there is a way of worshiping idols that perhaps you have not thought of. It is this. If there is something or some one that you like more than anything or person in all of the world, you may be loving that thing or that per son more than God Himself. If you do, you are worshiping an idol, and “Thou shalt have no other gods before me,” says Je hovah God.

Cover the other magnet with black paper, and paste the pictures of cigarettes, cards, and whiskey on the positive prong. The negative and positive poles can be deter mined by placing the poles of the two mag nets together. If they attract each other, you have a negative and a positive. Before the lesson allow the heads of the needles to be come magnetized on opposite poles of the same magnet. Place the magnets with the prongs upward, about eight inches apart, on a table with the prongs having the cross and pictures nearest each other. T ie a piece of silk thread around each needle.) Lesson : Do you know that needles can be like people? One of these needles re minds me of a godly person, and the other of a sinful person. You cannot tell by look ing at them which is which, but you can tell by the way they act. Often people look the same outwardly, when their hearts are entirely different. I am going to hold these needles above and between the two magnets, and we soon can tell which represents the Christian and which the unsaved. The first needle runs away from the black magnet and goes to ward the white magnet with the red cross. Do you think it represents the Christian? "Y es.” Now let us consider this other needle. It avoids the white magnet and runs toward the black magnet with the pictures of ciga rettes, cards, and whiskey. Do you think this kind of person loves the Lord Jesus with his: .whole heart? “No.” This first needle reminds me of the words found in John 4:24: “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” If we are going to wor ship God in spirit and in truth, we must leave the things of the world behind. W e must accept Christ as Saviour and fasten our love on Him. Outline and Exposition I. T he C ommand (Ex. 20:7) G OD ’S name stands for His person, His character, His nature, and His attributes. Hence the name of God is to be held in reverence. It appears that God had in mind the character and future conduct of His people when He gave this instruction as a re minder of their weakness and of their need of divine strength. Israel, as later history reveals, was a nation peculiarly guilty of this sin of taking God’s name in vain. II. T he I nterpretation (Matt. 5:33-37) There was much abuse of the third com mandment, and the people were accustomed to make rash vows when in anger. They were given to profanity which really was profaning the name of God. In this portion of Scripture, the Lord Jesus gives a pro hibition against swearing of any kind, either by heaven, or earth, or Jerusalem, or any

Exodus 20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. Matthew 5:33 Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: 34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne: 35 Nor by tne earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. 36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, be cause thou canst not make one hair white or black. 37 But let your communication be. Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. 12:33 Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit. 34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. 35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. 36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. 37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. Golden T ext: “Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name” (Matt. 6 :9 ). D evotional R eading: Exodus 33:17-23.
