needs to be red, for the red reminds us of the blood of Christ as the protection for the heart. When Paul and Silas preached at Thes- salonica, it was said of them: “These that have turned the world upside down are come hither” (Acts 17:6). The world needed to be turned right side up, and the gospel of Christ did it. W e will turn this jar right side up, and see what happens. When the cross is in the right position, it is black, reminding us that the Lord Jesus took our black sins on His cross. The heart is red, telling us that God sees Christ and not sin in the heart of the one who has accepted Him as Saviour. The Christians are the ones who exalt and reverence Christ. They are the only ones who can truly say: “Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.” Gentiles, aliens to the commonwealth of Israel (Eph. 2:11, 12), are nowhere in the Bible told to keep the S abbath; that day belongs to Israel, God’s peculiar people. II. T he O bservance (Ex. 20:9-11) The prohibition against doing any work on the Sabbath was very strict (vs. 9, 10). It was to be a reminder to Israel of the Creator's work as seen in a finished cre ation, of the Creator’s rights because of His ownership of all He created, and of the Creator’s authority over all the cre ation (v. 11). Furthermore, it was given to Israel that the nation might know it was the Lord God who sanctified Israel, that is, who set apart this people from all other peoples, separating them to Himself for His special purpose, even as He sancti fied their Sabbath. The law of the Sabbath was perhaps the most strict of any of Israel’s legal system. No work on pain of death was to be performed (cf. Ex. 35:1, 2 ). And this prohibition was all- inclusive, touching even the making of a fire (E x. 3 5 :3 ), or gathering of sticks (Num. 15:32-36), or plowing or harvest ing (Ex. 34:21, R .V .). Business of every sort was to be set aside upon that day (Neh. 13:15-22), and all burdens were to be laid down (Jer. 17:21, 2 2). In consider ation of all these instructions, we should remember that there is no such thing as a "Christian Sabbath” mentioned in Scrip ture. The church has been given the Lord’s Day, which is not the Sabbath moved from Saturday to Sunday, but is as distinctively Christian as the Sabbath is Jewish. “It is upside down.” “The cross is in the wrong place.” “The heart is black.”
W hat all of you have said is true. Did you notice that the paper on this jar is made to represent the world? This jar tells us very clearly what is the matter with the world. The heart on this jar is black. It is upside down. It is above the cross and not beneath it as it should be. The heart

Luke 13:10 And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. 11 And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and coula in no wise lift up herself. 12 And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity. 13 And he laid his hands on her^ and imme diately she was made straight, and glorified God. 14 And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people. There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sab bath day. 15 The Lord then answered him, and said, Thou hjmocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering? 16 And ought not this woman, being a daugh ter of Abraham, whom Satan hath hound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day? ^ I 17 Ana when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed: and all the people re joiced for all the glorious things that were done by him. Lesson T ext: E x. 20:8-11; Lk. 13:10-17. Golden T ext: “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy” (E x. 2 0 :8 ). D evotional R eading: Psa. 84:1-4. Outline and Exposition I. T he C ommand (E x . 20:8) T HE SABBATH was given to Israel as a sign between God and them selves, reminding them of what God had done in bringing them, out of the land of Egypt and giving them their freedom. It was never given to the Egyptians, nor to the people by whom Israel was then surrounded, nor to the people inhabiting the land of Canaan whither Israel was going. It was given to Israel and to no other people. It was to be a perpetual covenant, a sign between Israel and God, and it never has been abrogated nor changed; it still exists as Israel’s Sabbath.
