Careers in Early Years

Welcome to Early Years – earn, learn and have lots of fun in a very enjoyable and satisfying career! You can make a real difference through a career with young children in Cornwall.

If you love being with children, are dedicated to keeping them safe and happy, and are interested in educating and preparing them for later life, then a career in early years childcare could be perfect for you. With extra Government funding for childcare places and increasing demand from families, Cornwall needs more and more people to enter and train for a career in early years. All kinds of people work in early years and childcare. Children need a variety of positive role models and good influences. School

leavers and students; apprentices and adults of all ages, cultures and backgrounds, men and women, young and old - all play an important part. Early Years Services include day nurseries and pre-schools, childminders, nannies, after-school and holiday clubs all helping the youngest children aged 0-5 in Cornwall to learn, play and develop.

“I truly believe working in Early Years is the job for you… if you want to go to work to be paid to play! If you are creative, like to be hands-on and are kind and caring, it is just perfect! You get to join in on magical adventures, paint, bake, create, dance around the room, get stuck into messy play… all in a day’s work! There is no other job like it, and to know you are looking after people’s most precious possession, their little one, it really is the most important job you can do!”

Sophia Rose - Managing Director, Flying Start Nurseries

No, employers mainly look for personal qualities like patience, enthusiasm, empathy, responsibility and a sense of fun. As long as you are keen, you can undertake any training on the job. Once qualified you can take on more responsibility. Do I need experience or a qualification to work in early years?

08

www.peoplehub.info

What tasks might I do? Your main tasks would be:

• Playing with children and supporting their play • Preparing food and feeding babies, supervising children at mealtimes • Planning and organising games and other activities in and outdoors and supervising children’s play • Supporting children’s independence, self-confidence and social interaction • Reading stories and organising games to help develop language and number skills • Assessing the development of children and babies and maintaining records • Safeguarding children and ensuring excellent health and safety • Communication and supporting parents with their child’s development and well-being • Preparing children for school

You might prefer working for yourself as a self- employed registered childminder. Childminders provide home-from-home day care of children within a domestic home setting, and supervise and participate in their play, educational and other activities. For more information on childminding visit become a childminder. The Government is offering grants of up to £1,200 to new childminders and you can find out how to apply for a childminder start-up grant.

Chloe Barnicoat. Based at Flying Start, Cornwall College, Camborne. Aged 22.

“My favourite part of the apprenticeship was seeing the children develop and the impact I was having. I loved watching their progression as I learnt new skills. If this is what you want to do as a career and you have a passion for looking after children, then I’d say follow your heart and go for it and do an apprenticeship.”

Gisele’s husband passed away in 2021, leaving her in debt, without an income and with an expired Brazilian passport. People Hub’s support helped reduce her debts, get a Biometric Residency Permit and secure a freelance translator role with the Home Office. https://vimeo.com/864732549

Sector Spotlight: Digital The future is digital – that future is now

Cornwall is home to the fastest growing technology industry within the South West, yet it is facing a tech recruitment crisis that shows no signs of slowing. This is coupled with the growing need for digital skills in all other industries.

Employers, regardless of size or sector, report the main skill gap as being software engineering, developers and programming. Personal resilience, professional curiosity, the ability to learn independently and showing willingness and an interest in technology and what it can achieve are really important too. More young people are being encouraged to consider Computer Studies at School and gain digital work experience. Tech Cornwall regularly runs programmes like Mission to Mars and Tech Jams and the Tech Cornwall website has a calendar of events with more information on what they offer and how they represent and support a wide network of local digital and tech employers.

Fact: there are 1,460 digital/technology businesses and organisations within Cornwall & the Isles of Scilly and 4,830 people are employed by digital/tech organisations in the County.

Chloe Rickard, Digital Futures Academy Lead at Cornwall Council said...

“From AI to immersive tech, and data to digital leadership, there are plenty of skills Cornwall needs more of to thrive. To take advantage of opportunities in growth industries like floating offshore wind, Space and Data, Climate science, gaming and advanced AI to name a few, we need to grow a talent pipeline with as wide a reach as possible. The best and most effective tech teams have people from all sorts of different backgrounds who can bring their experience and knowledge to the table. And this transformation isn’t just restricted to the tech sector. Every single employer in Cornwall is going to need to think about how they can take advantage of technology and digital skills to grow their business and to provide better services. Cornwall Council is supporting efforts to deliver these skills at every level to make sure everyone benefits from our digital future.”

Digital Futures - building and transforming digital workforce skills for today and tomorrow across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Did you know that Cornwall has the fastest growing tech sector in the South West. This is creating an increasing demand for digital

skills which cannot currently be met locally. New Digital Opportunities for You!

Digital Futures is a new project, receiving £2 million of funding through the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund. It brings together 11 partners, led by Truro and Penwith College, to harness that growth and convert it into economic opportunity for our region by developing a pipeline of talent. The Project launched in February, creating a shared space for all things digital. It focuses on providing opportunities for local people, whilst tackling the challenges of a growing industry. It showcases that through delivering exciting training programmes and well-paid jobs locally, our vibrant tech sector can raise aspirations and create opportunities.

Digital Futures is for anyone, and everyone, aged 16+ living in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Those wishing to upskill in their current roles. Plus, school leavers, students, people who are unemployed, or employed in roles which don’t utilise their skills and knowledge, and those looking to change career. One of the delivery partners, TECwomen, will be offering more chances to take part in their DigitalUPLIFT through the Project. It was brilliantly received by the first group who undertook the programme including Steph White.

“Thanks to the DigitalUPLIFT programme I was able to make important connections in the world of tech and digital, right here in Cornwall. This amazing opportunity, the mentors we had, and the introductions into the different areas of tech helped me to realise what career path I wanted to follow and how to get there. I’m very pleased to say that 7 months after completing the course, I got an Apprenticeship as a Data Analyst.” To find out more about how Digital Futures can support you: Telephone: 01872 305 757 Email: digitalfutures@truro-penwith.ac.uk www.digitalfuturescornwall.co.uk

Your Guide to Apprenticeships

WHAT ARE THEY? WHO ARE THEY FOR? HOW CAN I FIND AND GET ONE?

An apprenticeship is a training scheme where you get paid to learn on the job and build up experience and qualifications at the same time.

Apprenticeships are not just for school and college leavers they are available at all ages. Apprenticeships are on offer in a wide range of trades and professions (more on that in a minute!) but are usually based around hands- on, practical (sometimes called “vocational”) skills. The end goal of an apprenticeship is to train and qualify you to be competent and experienced in the skills employers want. Apprentices earn a salary and will spend part of their working week on off-the-job training. This could be time spent at college or a training centre one day a week, or could be spent all on the job, online learning – or a combination of these. Many providers of apprenticeship training can now deliver all or most training on the job and online, so it’s not always required for apprentices to travel to attend their training.

APPRENTICESHIPS COME IN FOUR DIFFERENT LEVELS: 1. INTERMEDIATE (equivalent to 2 GCSEs) 2. ADVANCED (equivalent to 2 A-Level passes)

3. HIGHER (equivalent to a Foundation degree) 4.DEGREE (equivalent to a Bachelor’s or Master’s)

The apprenticeship level you start on will depend on different factors including, whether you have any previous work experience and qualifications, the type and level of the apprenticeship and the responsibilities you’ll be undertaking. You might start on a lower-level apprenticeship than your previous education level or any qualifications you have already achieved. Don’t worry, this is quite normal and will only be because you will be learning new skills and knowledge in a job or industry sector that you may have little or no experience of.

Once you have completed an apprenticeship, it is possible to then move onto a higher-level apprenticeship course, enabling you to continue to develop your skills, knowledge, experience and qualification levels.

18

www.cornwallapprenticeships.com

WHAT SORT OF APPRENTICESHIP SUBJECTS CAN I TAKE?

When people think of apprenticeships, they might tend to think of trades such as building and plumbing. While these are great options, they’re only a small piece of the apprenticeship puzzle. Apprenticeships are also available in healthcare, digital technology, business, creative and design, legal, environmental, engineering, manufacturing and much, much more. The possibilities are almost endless.

Most apprenticeship standards will include a qualification as part of the course but not all require one. As an apprentice you’ll be assessed at the end of your training and a pass, merit or distinction result means you will have met or exceeded the competency level required for the job and you’ll receive a certificate to show you’ve achieved your apprenticeship. WILL I GET A QUALIFICATION AT THE END OF IT? Usually quite a bit. Apprentices under the age of 19, or aged 19+ and in the first year of their apprenticeship, will earn at least the National Apprentice Wage of £6.40 per hour (1st April 2024), but many employers will pay much more, some upwards of £20,000+ per year. Employers will often also quickly increase wage rates as their apprentice gains experience. HOW MUCH WILL I EARN AS AN APPRENTICE?

Like other employees, as an apprentice, you will also be entitled to sick pay, at least 20 days holiday per year, and to any other benefits your employers offers its employees, such as healthcare plans and childcare vouchers. You will work between 30 and 40 hours per week but it is also possible to work part-time, depending on your employer and your own circumstances.

WHO SHOULD DO AN APPRENTICESHIP?

Anyone who wants to train and get qualified and paid whilst doing it. Whilst apprenticeships are popular options for young school and college leavers, they are in fact available to anyone aged 16 or over. So, if you’re seeking a career change and want to get back into work and make yourself even more employable in the future, they could be just the thing for you. The most important thing is that you are enthusiastic, ready to learn and have a great can-do attitude and a willingness and desire to learn.

All apprenticeships will take a minimum of 12-18 months to complete, plus the end point assessment. Some will be 2 years+ and degree levels can take around 3-6 years to complete. HOW LONG DOES AN APPRENTICESHIP TAKE?

WILL I HAVE A JOB AT THE END OF IT?

Most apprentices remain in employment with their employer when they complete their apprenticeship. However, by achieving your apprenticeship, it will increase your future job prospects and earning power! While an apprenticeship does not usually guarantee you permanent employment within the company training you, it hugely increases your chances of securing alternative work in your chosen career.

CORNWALL COLLEGE LOGO

Welcome to The Cornwall College Group (TCCG), your go-to hub for unlocking career possibilities.

Although we’re best known as the top performing further education college in Cornwall, we are a lot more besides. With over 13,000 learners each year studying at ten vibrant campuses across Cornwall and Devon, our broad ranging curriculum has a long-standing history of fostering a diverse range of talent. From school leavers up to post-graduate degrees, and everything in between. As the Career College, our mission is to immerse students in real-world experiences whatever their pathway may be, providing industry-relevant knowledge and skills to ensure they are thoroughly equipped for a meaningful and successful career ahead.

South West’s first Pre-16

academy takes off

Breaking new ground in education, TCCG has been the first to establish Pre-16 Academies in the region. We’ve teamed up with diverse employers in a range of sectors, to create opportunities for school students to build skills and dive into real-world experiences like never before. Our latest academy to launch is a pioneering collaboration between Cornwall College St Austell and St Austell Brewery, which has recently welcomed its first Year 10 cohort of hospitality students from Fowey River Academy.

Redefining industry engagement for student success

As the Career College, we’re constantly evolving our own approach to engaging employers. It’s our dynamic industry partnerships that directly shape the educational landscape across our campuses. Our innovative engagement initiatives are designed to bridge the gap between education and industry, creating a relationship that empowers our students with skills that directly translate to success in their chosen fields.

Graduates celebrate university success

Top performing college for apprenticeships

At the other end of the educational spectrum, the 2023 Autumn term saw us gather at a grand ceremony in Truro Cathedral to celebrate graduates from university- level courses across our campuses. Honouring the achievements of our graduates is always a highlight.

We’re proud to say that our apprenticeship provision continued to go from strength-to-strength this year, as TCCG was named the top-performing college for apprenticeships in the South West. We have outperformed our competitors in the region, showcasing our commitment to providing high-quality apprenticeship programmes and ensuring the success of our learners.

This year we celebrated the success of close to 250 graduates from across our institutions.

In the last five years, we’ve worked with over 2,700 apprenticeship employers. Leading the way with postgraduate ecology apprenticeship

Apprenticeships are not just for school leavers. We’re proving that point through our Eden Project University Centre, which has become the hub for the UK’s first-ever cohort of ecological postgraduate degree apprentices. This ground-breaking course, a significant milestone for environmental education, is just one of the higher education programmes offered as a partnership between TCCG and the Eden Project. As a response to the critical shortage of trained ecologists highlighted by a recent committee of MPs, this initiative aligns with the government’s plans for green jobs.

In the last five years, we’ve had over 5,400 people start their apprenticeship with us.

The Future of Adult Learning in Cornwall

Truro and Penwith College has been offering Career and Professional Development courses for adults for almost 30 years.

In 2022, the College launched its Future Skills Institute (FSI), the new umbrella name for its wide-ranging 19+ provision that includes Apprenticeships, Career & Professional Development and University Centre courses. 2024 is set to be an exciting year for the FSI. The opening of the College’s new STEM and Health Skills Centre in Bodmin this September has brought industry-led courses and CPD opportunities to students across North East Cornwall while the launch of new projects in renewable construction, composite engineering and healthcare will continue to provide access to Cornwall’s future career opportunities. Headed up by the College’s Director of Apprenticeships and Business Partnerships, Hayley McKinstry, the Future Skills Institute is now responsible for creating and maintaining partnerships with some of Cornwall’s largest and best employers to ensure the skills needs of Cornwall are being met, while providing targeted skills training that provides local people with access to quality careers. The College was recently recognised as Cornwall’s only ‘Apprenticeship Expert’ by the Department for Education while its University Centre was awarded TEF Silver highlighting its constant focus on quality. A string of successful multi-million-pound investments, to provide state-of-the-art, industry-standard training and learning facilities has led to the College heading up Cornwall’s latest £2.5 million skills boost, that will see the College lead the transformation of skills training in Cornwall.

We caught up with Hayley McKInstry to find out more about how Truro and Penwith College is spearheading the development of future focused training and career opportunities for Cornwall.

Tell us more about the new STEM and Health Skills Centre in Bodmin?

The STEM and Health Skills Centre is a new £6.3m centre in Bodmin that aims to transform the teaching of industry-relevant skills in Cornwall. It is a centre of excellence for the education and training in Engineering, Health and Digital. We have engaged with employers in North and East Cornwall to shape a curriculum offer that suits the requirements of their businesses and also used their expertise to ensure the facilities meet industry need.

What does the College’s ‘Apprenticeship Expert’ status mean?

The Department for Education (DfE) has selected Truro and Penwith College as Cornwall’s only Expert Apprenticeship Provider, and we are one of only five Colleges to achieve this status in the UK. Our selection confirms we are delivering the very best apprenticeships in Cornwall. To achieve expert status the College had to demonstrate excellence across a strict range of criteria including top learner achievement rates, an exceptional rating for employer feedback and strong financial health.

We are so incredibly proud to have achieved a Silver rating in the 2023 Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) which highlighted the University Centre’s inspirational teaching, research and innovative practices of our staff. Our work with Cornwall’s employers shone through as our curriculum was recognised as “aligning with local skills needs” and being “informed by engagement in a matrix of networks” and the student experience in general was judged to be of a “very high quality”. Why has the University Centre Truro & Penwith been awarded TEF Silver?

What is the £2.5 million skills boost for Cornwall?

The £2.5 million is an investment Cornwall has received from the Department for Education’s Local Skills Improvement Fund (LSIF) to help transform skills training in Cornwall to align with the needs identified by local employers in the Local Skills Improvement Plan.

Hospitality: Bringing people together and creating careers

Cornwall attracts visitors from around the world, making the hospitality industry a key player in the County’s economy. The industry has a diverse range of establishments, including hotels, bed and breakfasts, restaurants, cafes, and tourist attractions, all of which create an exciting and fast-paced environment for individuals seeking a long and rewarding career in hospitality. The industry has seen significant growth in recent years and is one of the biggest employers in the County, and with more people choosing to holiday and visit Cornwall all year round, it offers permanent as well as seasonal work opportunities. There is a constant demand from hospitality employers for new entrants to the sector as well as skilled professionals to cater to the diverse needs of visitors.

With a wide range of job types on offer, hospitality is suited to a variety of personal skill sets and interests.

Skills in demand from hospitality employers include: • good interpersonal skills • customer service • adaptability • attention to detail • strong communication and problem-solving abilities • a genuine passion for providing exceptional quality experiences

The top 5 hospitality jobs by volume of employment in Cornwall in 2023 were: 1. Bar Staff 2. Kitchen and Catering Assistants 3. Waitressing Staff 4. Chefs 5. Cleaners and Domestics

Many of these skills can be developed as you train and learn on the job.

A new project in Cornwall is set to open doors for young people across the County through improving engagement in the hospitality industry. Mark Lewin and James Cavanagh-Shaddock are two thirds of the Founder-Director team behind the Cornwall Hospitality Collective. When asked what they are doing Mark said, “We’re bringing together hospitality leaders and businesses in Cornwall – of all sizes.” Cornwall Hospitality Collective, a Community Interest Company, has two main goals. The first, to provide free or discounted training for our member hospitality businesses. The second goal is to support career initiatives to encourage more young people into hospitality and show them the variety of pathways it offers, as well as trying to bring people back into the industry.

SHOWING, NOT JUST TELLING

The Cornwall Hospitality Collective is a paid membership for businesses, with numerous industry well-knowns showing interest. At less than a few months old, it’s an initiative that has already seen impressive growth, this Spring it’s expected to be 60 members strong.

The Cornwall Hospitality Collective is working closely with Cornwall’s Education Business Partnership, the Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Careers Hub and Cornwall Council to develop hospitality opportunities for young people.

Veryan Palmer, Family Director at the The Headland and a Founder Director of the Collective has begun to offer alternative provision opportunities for students on work experience, developing programmes that work around the individual. James from the Cornwall Hospitality Collective said “The Headland is outstanding when it comes to school engagement. They know the importance of encouraging Maths and English as much as hospitality opportunities, and we’ve heard of their Head Chefs impressing on students how important this is in hospitality when it comes to costings, ingredients and menu writing.”

Inspiring positive change

It’s this engagement with students which is a key ingredient in the Cornwall Hospitality Collective’s early success. “A big part of what we do is school engagement with a difference,” James said. “We recently cooked mussels for 720 students at Treviglas School. A huge number of them had never seen a cooked mussel, let alone tried one. And they did on that day.”
