Sector Spotlight: Digital The future is digital – that future is now

Cornwall is home to the fastest growing technology industry within the South West, yet it is facing a tech recruitment crisis that shows no signs of slowing. This is coupled with the growing need for digital skills in all other industries.

Employers, regardless of size or sector, report the main skill gap as being software engineering, developers and programming. Personal resilience, professional curiosity, the ability to learn independently and showing willingness and an interest in technology and what it can achieve are really important too. More young people are being encouraged to consider Computer Studies at School and gain digital work experience. Tech Cornwall regularly runs programmes like Mission to Mars and Tech Jams and the Tech Cornwall website has a calendar of events with more information on what they offer and how they represent and support a wide network of local digital and tech employers.

Fact: there are 1,460 digital/technology businesses and organisations within Cornwall & the Isles of Scilly and 4,830 people are employed by digital/tech organisations in the County.

Chloe Rickard, Digital Futures Academy Lead at Cornwall Council said...

“From AI to immersive tech, and data to digital leadership, there are plenty of skills Cornwall needs more of to thrive. To take advantage of opportunities in growth industries like floating offshore wind, Space and Data, Climate science, gaming and advanced AI to name a few, we need to grow a talent pipeline with as wide a reach as possible. The best and most effective tech teams have people from all sorts of different backgrounds who can bring their experience and knowledge to the table. And this transformation isn’t just restricted to the tech sector. Every single employer in Cornwall is going to need to think about how they can take advantage of technology and digital skills to grow their business and to provide better services. Cornwall Council is supporting efforts to deliver these skills at every level to make sure everyone benefits from our digital future.”
