Henry Charles Carey (1793–1879) was hailed by his contemporaries as “the political economist of the age” ( Sartain’s Magazine ). Here he examines global economic policies in relation to slavery: “Carey was the first to unite with a general knowledge of natural science a deep interest in philosophy as well as originality in the treatment of economic

problems. No American of the 19th century can claim more justly our high regard for labors well done than this zealous champion of monism” (Boucke). Octavo. [London:] in the Savoy: printed by John Nutt, assignee of Edward Sayer Esq, for John Walthoe, 1710 One of the earliest manuals on the poor laws First edition of Carter’s treatise on the poor laws, one of the earliest manuals of its type, which soon became the standard work on the subject, with five editions by 1725. Carter wrote several legal works and was library keeper at the Inner Temple. Duodecimo (160 × 92 mm). Contemporary calf, contemporary manuscript title “Poor Laws” to spine, blind border to covers. Complete with terminal advertisement. A few paragraphs underlined in an early hand, obscured early signature to rear free endpaper.
