38 COLTON, Calvin. Public Economy for the United States. New York: Published by A. S. Barnes & Co., 1848 First edition of this protectionist treatise, opposing free trade and supporting the establishment of a protected economy within the United States. Colton (1789–1857), professor of political economy at Trinity College, Hartford, forcefully advocated the policy of protection to home industries, and was a devoted follower of Henry Clay, whose works he edited. This was his most extensive work, linking protectionist thought into the American tradition of liberty. Octavo. Original brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt, light yellow endpapers. Pencilled ownership signature to front pastedown, occasional pencilled ticks. Very light wear at extremities, foxing and sporadic finger-soiling to contents, light running dampstain at bottom fore edge. Edinburgh: James Ballantyne and Co., 1814 Constitutional authority First edition of the Scottish author’s analysis of government rights and constitutional authority, this an attractive copy with the bookplates of the Whig politician Edward Strutt. “Craig’s Elements combines Godwin and Adam Smith, making the impartial spectator as anarchist the theoretical foundation for a comprehensive text-book in the political sciences. It may have been intended for the new professional course which the Professor of Logic, George Jardine, wanted introduced at the Scottish universities . . . Craig’s work

was immediately translated into German (Leipzig, 1816) in support of the old-liberal, anti-revolutionary cause” (Haakonssen, p. 156). It is inscribed on the front free endpaper of vol. I from the Trustees of Manchester College, York, to Edward Strutt (1801–1880), “as a Prize for Diligence, Regularity & Proficiency during the Session of 1817–18”. Strutt, for whom the title Baron Belper was created in 1856, was a first-year student at York at the time. He later sat as a Whig in the House of Commons, and served as the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster from 1852 to 1854. 3 volumes, octavo (210 × 130 mm). Contemporary tree calf, spines lettered and decorated in gilt, edges yellow and speckled blue.
