University. She said it was great catching up. Emlyn Hughes is still a physics professor at Columbia University in New York City, working now primarily on lung imaging research for COVID as well as assessing radiation damage in the Marshall Islands from the U.S. nuclear weapons testing program. He teaches quantum mechanics to both undergraduate and Ph.D. students. His wife, Ivana, who is President of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, has dual U.S./Serbian citizenship. They have two sons and a daughter, ages 11 to 21. Their daughter graduated from Hopkins in 2019 and is in her fourth year at Belgrade Medical School in Serbia. Emlyn says, “As long as I am not in the middle of the Pacific Ocean beginning in June (some real risk), I will make the 45th reunion!” Leigh McLaughlin moved to Boston, Massa- chusetts, for college and never left. She works as a model and teaches Pilates. She is a SAG-AFTRA Guild member for television and film. Leigh has three daughters. The eldest lives and works in Washington, D.C., while her middle daughter lives and works in Denver, Colorado. The youngest is a junior at Texas Christian University (TCU) in Texas. Leigh mentioned that TCU’s football team is currently undefeated (as of November 21, 2022) and ranked fourth in the country. Karen Monteith Flynn still works at the University of New Haven, where she enjoys her new role in retention. She writes, “After 37 years in the financial aid profession, it was time for a change. My husband recently retired, and we hope to travel more. My older son is a Secret Service agent and transferred to the New Haven office in May. It is great to have him back in Connecticut. My younger son is an underwriter in the reinsurance industry and lives in Stamford, Connecticut. Looking forward to seeing everyone at our 45th!” Steve Newton still enjoys his work at Baylor Scott & White Hospital in Dallas-Ft. Worth, Texas. He and his wife purchased a second home in Branford, Connecticut, on Johnson’s Point, where they have vacationed for the last 16 years. He writes, “With two of our three kids working in New York City, and other family in Connecticut, we are excited about retiring there sometime in the next few years.” However, he also shared they would

spend the winters in Ft. Worth. Patrick O’Regan and his wife, Cecily, moved back from San Francisco, California, and are still getting settled in their house on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. They are growing a spice garden and enjoy both “watching all of the critters in the yard while having coffee on our deck” and spending time on their boat. Bill Schrier and his wife, Micheen, live on the Monterey Peninsula in California. He is in his 19th year of teaching high school in Carmel, California, and he “loves it more and more each day.” He is thrilled to finally be back in the classroom after COVID. This is Bill’s 18th year of coaching the school’s mock trial team, and he just returned from taking his team to compete in Chicago, Illinois. Additionally, last year he started teaching Constitutional Law at Monterey College of Law in Seaside, California. And if that is not enough, he is finishing his fourth term as the Carmel Teachers Union president. He writes, “When I’m not doing all of that, I spend a lot of time on long walks with our rescued dog.” Burchell Sise Valldejuli writes that business at mActivity, the gym she owns in New Haven, is picking up after two difficult years due to COVID. She writes, “Hopkins uses our conference room for meetings, and we have HOP alums as members. If you are in the area, please come by. I really hope we have a

Lisa Fisher Chamberlain wrote from Tel Aviv: "I am visiting my niece and her family and attending the wedding of a friend’s daughter. Happily reporting that Eric and I sold our business in September. I’m a part time advisor and looking forward to the next chapter!" Jessica Kogel "loves living in our recently renovated 1850’s Washington Depot, Connecticut farmhouse after 25 wonderful years in Georgia." This from Betsy Wingate Haussmann: "My husband and I have both retired and are spending the majority of our time living in Sonoma, California, although we still have our home in San Francisco as well. Our greatest joy is spending time with our 2 year old grandson who lives in Denver, Colorado." 1978 45th Reunion, June 2–3, 2023 Thank you to Robert Yudkin for his excellent work as Class of 1978 Correspondent.

Andrea Boissevain writes that everyone at work is cautiously optimistic as they return to “regular” public health activities that got pushed aside during COVID. One activity her department (the Town of Stratford, Connecticut, Health Department) tackled during COVID was reapplying for national reaccreditation—which was just received and is good for another five years. She writes, “I thought to myself, ‘Phew, now I can retire having achieved such a huge milestone…’ and then I remembered we put two kids through Hopkins ( Emma Fox ’08 and Sarah Fox ’10 ) and then through college, so, no, not just yet. I’m grateful I [still] have a job, an amazing team, and support from our administration—not all public health officials can say that. I look forward to connecting in June at our reunion… can’t believe it’s been more than 40 years since we were running around the Hill.” Janet Granger and her husband, Len, live in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. She writes that she caught up by phone with Julia Levy , who is the Executive Director of the Roundabout Theatre in New York City. Janet also saw Jim Levy in Ft. Lauderdale as he is a law professor at Nova South-eastern

possible.” Carlos Zilveti and his wife are enjoying retirement and chasing their goal of visiting all our National Parks (I checked and there are 423 of them!). With about 10 more scheduled for 2023, he says they will be at the 80% mark. While it is not one of our parks, they just returned from an exciting trip to the “Polar Bear Capital of the World” in Churchill, Manitoba—just shy of the Arctic circle. He sends “warmest wishes to all for a joyous and healthy holiday season.” And finally, me, Robert Yudkin . This is the end of my four issues as class secretary. It’s been an honor and a privilege (trying to nudge you all into sending me stuff). I hope someone assumes the role. I’m still working (consulting and real estate) but starting to look for a place to retire (perhaps in New England). Our eldest son is about to complete his Ph.D. in Epidemiology and our younger son and daughter-in-law got married in November
