We need change says candidate Gérard Bertrand ROCKLAND | One candidate vying for a seat on Clarence-Rockland council says change is not just an idea but a necessity for the future of the city. over the years I want to put it to the city’s use."
described himself as unhappy with what he has seen going on at the council table for the past few years. He has been a frequent visitor at council’s public sessions during the previous three years and fired many questions at council during the open forum period. "I have asked questions without getting any real answers," Bertrand said. "I think a council has to work like a team. Right now, it’s more like there are two opposing teams on council. The people need a coun- cil which is open and ready to talk with and respect the residents of the city." Bertrand’s own past political experience includes his time as mayor for the former
Township of Cambridge prior to its amalga- mation into The Nation municipality. Dur- ing the time he was mayor of Cambridge he also represented the township at the United Counties of Prescott-Russell council table. His past record of community involve- ment also includes sitting on the Children’s Aid board and at present he is part of the Eastern Ontario Health Unit’s administrative board. "I really appreciate the time when I was mayor," he said. "Today, I am concerned about the health and well-being of Clar- ence-Rockland residents. That’s why I am a candidate. All the experience I’ve gained
Since filing his nomination papers, Ber- trand has been working on his new cam- paign platform. During the 2010 civic election he ran in Ward 7 on a platform of improvements to local roads and other in- frastructure. It was not his home ward and he lost out in the balloting to current in- cumbent Coun.
"It’s important that people know that we need change," said Gérard "Gerry" Bertrand. "Not only a change in those elected to of- fice, but also a change for the better. They (voters) have a choice." Bertrand, 67, has filed his papers as a candidate for the Ward 5 seat. Coun. Guy Félio holds the post now but last month an- nounced that he will not seek re-election in the October vote this year. Like several other declared candidates challenging other incumbents, Bertrand
