CIHA students hit ice at Arctic Winter Games ROCKLAND | The final weekend of the March break saw two hockey academy students put on jerseys for Nunavut at the Arctic Winter Games. Kaelan Collier and Ryleigh McPherson are doing their Grade 9 academics in Rock- land at the Canadian International Hockey Academy (CIHA). But for the past week they made a special trip back up north to repre- sent their home territory, Nunavut, in hock- ey during the Arctic Winter Games (AWG) in Fairbanks, Alaska. an outstanding young man who is dedi- cated to his hockey as well as his studies. Participating in the Arctic Winter Games is a great honour and opportunity for him, and I know he will do a great job representing Team Nunavut as well as CIH Academy.”

Corey MacDonald, head coach for the U18 girls team, described the AWG as an excellent opportunity for McPherson to test the skills she has developed at CIHA. “Playing in a tournament of this magni- tude will give Ryleigh a chance to gauge her progress,” MacDonald stated, “and demon- strate the intense level of competition out there in women’s hockey.” The biannual Arctic Winter Games is the world’s largest northern multi-sport and cultural event.
McPherson hails from Iqaluit, Nunavut. She made her first move towards a hockey career when she enrolled at Trinity College, a private boarding school in Ontario, and after a year there became a student with CIHA. In 2012 McPherson became the youngest member of Team Nunavut’s AWG hockey
The American state is this year’s host for the Arctic Winter Games, which ran from March 15 to 22. Before coming down to Rockland to at- tend classes and hockey training at CIHA, Collier played House League level in his hometown of Rankin Inlet, Nunavut. His first year of playing triple-A level hockey for the CIHA Voyageurs saw Collier finish the 23-game season with one goal and six as- sists to his credit. Head Coach André Savage credited the improvement in Collier’s skill level with earning him a berth on Nunavut’s AWG team. “It’s remarkable to witness the improve- ments Kaelan has made this season,” Coach Savage stated on the CIHA website. “He is
