VARS | Witnesses who saw a dog being dragged behind a pickup truck called police. Now a Vars area man faces animal cruelty and other charges. Ottawa police answered a 911 call about a pickup truck spotted driving along Carlsbad Lane in the City of Ottawa’s east end Sun- day evening, March 16. Witnesses saw a German shepherd dragged along the road behind the truck, attached by an eight-foot rope tied around its neck and affixed to a trailer hitch. CLARENCE CREEK | A 20-year-old local man was pronounced dead on the scene at the site of an ear- ly-morning accident Sunday in Clarence Creek. Xavier Ladouceur-Rochon, 20, of Clarence-Rockland was alone in his car when it rolled over into the ditch along Henri Road. Fire fight- ers from stations 2 and 3 in Clar- ence Creek and Rockland arrived on the scene in response to a call about the accident. They found Ladouceur-Rochon partly ejected from the vehicle. An autopsy to determine the ex- act cause of death was scheduled
for early in the week. Police received a 911 call about the accident at 3:17 a.m. that day. At present police believe the de- ceased was driving by himself when the accident happened. The car involved in the fatal ac- cident is a 2002 grey Chevrolet Malibu. The OPP Technical Traf- fic Collision unit is still reviewing evidence gathered at the scene. Anyone who may have witnessed the accident or have information which may help investigators is asked to either phone the Rock- land OPP station at 446-5124 or toll-free 1-888-310-1122.
Using a description given of the pickup truck, police tracked down the vehicle to the home of Adrien Paquette, 72. There they found a two-year-old German Shepherd, named Tyson, in the back yard. Const. Marc Soucy reported the dog had “obvious injuries” requir- ing medical treatment. Police told Paquette to take the dog to a veterinarian. They also contacted the Ottawa Humane Society (OHS), which later took charge of the dog.
Tyson the dog has received treatment for cuts and bruises to its paws and medicated to relieve pain. He is now an OHS ward as Paquette has surrendered him to the society. OHS officials report that Tyson is responding well to treatment so far and is very well-behaved and affectionate. Once he has recovered from his injuries, Tyson will be available for adoption.
