TPT’S COMMITMENT TO QUALITY AND COMMUNITY BY SYLVIA STROBEL, PRESIDENT & CEO, TWIN CITIES PBS
For nearly 70 years, Twin Cities PBS (TPT) has been an essential part of Minnesota’s media landscape—trusted, accessible and dedicated to informing, educating and enriching our communities. Our mission has always been to serve our communities by providing high-quality, freely accessible programming that reflects the stories of our region. This commitment remains steadfast, even as public media faces challenges to its funding. Public media is built on a bedrock of trust and accessibility. Nearly 90% of viewers say they trust TPT for unbiased, well-researched local content. Unlike commercial media, public media is managed and governed locally, and TPT’s mission is to ensure broad and free access to educational programming like “Almanac,” “Minnesota Experience,” “This is Minnesota Orchestra” and curated experiences like the Minnesota Channel. In addition, TPT’s public health and safety initiative, TPT NOW, offers a groundbreaking, multilingual alert system that ensures all communities have the information they need in critical moments. At TPT, we take pride in producing and delivering content that reflects the best of Minnesota. This April, we’re excited to bring viewers the return of “Stage,” our local music series filmed at the legendary 7th St Entry. In addition to musical collaborations, each episode includes a behind-the scenes-and-songs experience and premiers Monday nights on TPT 2 and the PBS App. The fourth season’s lineup includes bands and musicians such as Kiss the Tiger, The Suburbs, Lamaar and Cory Wong, among many others. Programs like “Stage” highlight why public media is so vital— giving artists a platform and sharing Minnesota’s vibrant cultural landscape with audiences everywhere. And, of course, we continue to bring viewers the very best in PBS national programming, including “Austin City Limits Celebrates 50 Years,” premiering on April 4. Public media has long been a cornerstone of American culture, and we are proud to uphold that tradition. All of our work is possible because of the generous support of our members. While federal funding represents one piece of TPT’s budget, it plays a crucial role in sustaining the programming and services that our community depends on. Everything we do at TPT is made possible by supporters like you. If TPT is a meaningful part of your life, we invite you to deepen your impact by becoming a sustaining member or increasing your contribution today. At a time when reliable information, educational resources and community connections are more important than ever, public media remains a pillar of our democracy. Together, we can ensure that TPT—and our mission of public service—endures for generations to come.

Welcome to the Wonder Hub TPT’s new initiative spotlights events and resources for parents, caregivers, and their families
Before the development of our program, we reached out to parents, caretakers, and other experts in the field to learn more about the challenges that parents face and how our station can meet these challenges. There were many challenges shared with us; lack of appropriate media options for their children, balancing career demands with parental responsibilities, handling big emotions during social development, and connecting with other parents. The feedback we gathered is at the core of why we created the Wonder Hub. We want to create a platform that leverages what our station is great at, telling stories that impact and using our resources to create a community of learning for parents. Whether you are a parent looking to connect to a larger community, a grandparent finding a fun event to bring a grandchild, or a caretaker searching for family-friendly programming, the Wonder Hub has you covered.
The Twin Cities PBS: Wonder Hub is a free-to-join group that provides an inside look into programming and events that focus on families. Each month, Wonder Hub participants receive updates through email and our website about the different ways to get engaged with our family programming.
What do we do at the Wonder Hub? Here are four ways we keep families involved!
• Program Recommendations: The Wonder Hub curates programs from TPT and PBS that families will love with a special emphasis on shows that families can co-view and enjoy together. • Event Invitations: Whether hosted at our station or out in the community, the Wonder Hub shares invitations for events with families looking for something fun and educational to do together. • Resources and Activities: Dig deeper into your favorite shows with resources like video games and activity guides that are shared and downloadable at no cost. • Stories from Parents: Hear directly from parents about the challenges and triumphs that they encounter in our monthly blog and video series.

TPT Passport Q+A
Did you know that, as a member, you get access to extended, on-demand programming through TPT Passport? This month, we’ve rounded up some answers to commonly asked questions. As always, you are welcome to reach out to members@tpt.org to solve any tech issues you might encounter.
What is TPT Passport? TPT Passport is a benefit for members: one that requires a username and password (which you can create by going to TPT.org/sign-in and setting up an account) that you use to log in to TPT.org or the PBS App to watch additional episodes of your favorite TPT shows. Whether you’re on the site or in the app, you’ll notice a small compass symbol in the corner of the show image. That’s your invitation to watch a show that’s only available to members. How can I access shows within Passport on my SmartTV? By using the PBS App! Download the app from the app store, and use your TPT Passport credentials to log in and gain access to extended programming. Why do I need to log in for some shows and not for others? A lot of shows are available for all to stream online. Episodes marked as “Passport” are shows you’ll need to log-in to watch, whether that’s online or on the app.
Can I watch TPT Passport shows online? Yes! Head to TPT.org and search for your favorite shows in the search bar. Watch on-demand videos after logging in.
What shows are on TPT Passport? All kinds of shows! TPT adds new shows every week. From "Masterpiece" classics, to "Finding Your Roots," "Austin City Limits," "America’s Test Kitchen," and many more.

MINNESOTA EXPERIENCE Brutal Utopias
In 1968, architect Ralph Rapson was tasked with designing one of the largest urban renewal projects in US history, in the Cedar Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis. "Brutal Utopias" explores the resistance to urban renewal and its aftermath, using archival materials, interviews, and motion graphics to examine the dreams and violence of modernity as they began to unravel. Take a Hike: The Multiple Benefits of Spending Time in Nature By Edd and Cynthia Staton
Physical Regular exercise like hiking is particularly important for older adults to help:
• Strengthen bones, muscles and joints • Reduce the risk of falling by improving coordination and balance • Bolster cardiovascular health and ward off coronary heart disease Mental An outdoor hike requires nothing from us mentally other than being present. Free from our normal hectic environment, we can think more clearly and deeply. Other benefits of exposure to nature include: • Better management of unhealthy emotions like loneliness and irritability • Improved cognitive function, including memory, attention and creativity • Boosting your mood and sense of well-being from the release of endorphins during hiking If hiking is a significant increase in your normal activity level, it's always smart to check with your doctor first. Build up some endurance beforehand and take it slow. Begin with daily walks, increasing the distance each time. Hat, appropriate footwear and socks, sunglasses and sunscreen are mandatory. Hiking poles or a walking stick for greater stability are lightweight and easy to carry.
Hiking combines America's favorite form of exercise with the proven mental health benefits of spending time in nature. Hitting the trails can be enjoyable in all four seasons. Spring offers the first appearance of beautiful wildflowers. Forests are vibrant and alive during summer. The cool days of autumn present nature's most brilliant palette of color. Winter's quiet solitude invites peace and introspection. A study in Harvard Health Publishing reveals that the average adult spends more than 10 hours each day sitting. Research links too much time indoors to increased risk for a host of problems from chronic stress to diseases like obesity, substance abuse and depression. Getting outside regularly offers the best of all worlds to give our bodies and brains the reset they need.

Transitioning from Caregiving to Living By Myrna Marofsky
Ben's eyes glistened with tears as he spoke to me about moving his wife to a memory care community when he could no longer handle her care. "Now she is there, and I am here. I wake up and can't figure out what I'm supposed to do." For five years, I was my husband's 24/7 care partner. When he passed away, I expected the grief of his death. I didn't expect the disorientation that came when my caregiving role ended. No longer was I consumed with how his dementia would manifest itself. Instead of constantly asking, "What if?" I was faced with "What now?" Life after caregiving is a huge readjustment — first, the exhaustion, then the realization that things are different, including you, and then the task of defining a new life path. It is a story of finding yourself again after months and years of giving yourself to others.
Barb Peterson, a clinical professor at the School of Nursing at the University of Minnesota with a specialty in psychiatric and mental health, describes caregiving as trauma-inducing. As a result, she says, "ending caregiving requires post-traumatic healing." Peterson looks at this healing as a process. She describes it as "a time for exploration, giving yourself the freedom to let your brain accept things as they are, being present in the moment, and being courageously honest in asking what I want?" She adds, "No one is rushing you to do anything." In other words, it is a life transition that requires re-calibration with special considerations. Do not ignore the aftermath of caregiving trauma. Lingering exhaustion, guilty relief and confusion do not disappear quickly. The stark realities of age, health, safety and finances result in fearful thinking.
With intention, the end of caregiving can be an opportunity to create a life designed for you, by you, with no timeline.
That's why I call this "re-calibrating" rather than "re-inventing." Re-calibrating focuses on what can exist with some mending, adjusting, repairing, and, in some cases, replacing. "Re-inventing" implies a makeover and feels intimidating and frightening. With intention, the end of caregiving can be an opportunity to create a life designed for you, by you, with no timeline.
