Eclectic Choices

In this auction, the Venduehuis has brought together a broad collection of modern and contemporary art and design. This time it was decided to combine both design and art, not only in this catalogue but also during the viewing days. This means that we can offer you the opportunity to make eclectic choices to enrich your existing collection or yet to be formed collections. In our March catalogue we pointed out that collectors, after a number of decades chose to either rearrange their collection or under some circumstances sell parts of their collection. Past experience of previous collections has shown that the collectors were stimulated to think about the content or the purpose of their possession. Collectors’ couple Karla Kersten and Ge van Steenbergen, after thirty years have decided to sell their collection which has been gathered together with passion. A remarkable collection of which a confrontation with experimentation was never shunned and lead to a lovingly collected compilation of more than eighty works some of which (lots 277-285) will be auctioned in the auction rooms and some (lots 501-568) will be auctioned online. With the departure of Galerie Nouvelles Images, The Netherlands has lost one of the oldest galleries that during a period of almost 60 years was an important contributor to the art climate in this country. The present management had no other choice than to discontinue their activities in the most careful and diligent manner and bring the last works from their collection to the attention of a wide public. The Venduehuis accepted this task gladly. Some seventy works will be offered in this auction, partly in our auction rooms, partly online. All the works from the Nouvelles Images collection can be recognised in the catalogue by the logo. In addition we are offering a large number of artworks from a Dutch corporate collection from the 1960’s.

We hope that this auction will as before, attract a broad public.

A ZigZag chair, elm with brass fittings, executed by Gerard van de Groenekan at a later date. The chair is unmarked and most likely sold by Metz & Co, Amsterdam before 1964, as chairs where brand-marked after Rietvelds’ death in 1964. 74x33x44 cm Provenance: Acquired by the father of the present owner,

In this remarkably simple chair, with four rectangular sections, the seat and back are joined by a system of ‘dove-tailing’ or a ‘comb-system’. Two triangular wedges set in the acute angles act as reinforcement to the seat and the base. The wedges are screwed with brass nuts and bolts, and represent one of the few instances when the hardware became a decorative part of the overall design. This system of joining belies the complex engineering of construction. The nuts and bolts must pass through each of the panels in order to produce the strength needed for the cantilevered structure. This signature design was to become an important addition to many of Rietveld’s later interiors, often being paired with the crate dining table. Furthermore, with the re-evaluation of earlier commissions, Rietveld decided to add the chair to existing interiors, including the Utrecht Schröder House. 98 Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964) Designed in 1923, Dutch.

‘Divan tafeltje’/divan table, executed by Gerard van de Groenekan around 1980. Brand-marked ‘H.G.M. G.A. v.d. Groenekan, De Bilt, Nederland’, underneath the base. The coloured surfaces of the table serve as visual compositional elements, almost negating their structural function. The weightless quality is further emphasised by the painted white edges, allowing the planes to float in space, thus ‘dematerialising’ the volume. The table, which was originally designed for the Schröder House in Utrecht, is constructed from only five elements, and painted in five colours. It was illustrated twice in 1928 in ‘De Stijl’. 59x50x50 cm Provenance: Acquired directly from G. van de Groenekan by the present owner in 1981. Literature: Marijke Küper, Ida van Zijl, ‘Gerrit Th.
