The Kersten van Steenbergen Collection

104

In the spring of 2003 the oldest Dutch drawing society ’Teekengenootschap Pictura’ in Dordrecht organised an exhibition ‘’Out of the Closet’’ giving an overview of the works from the collection of Karla Kersten and Ge van Steenbergen. The title was a literal definitive as many of the artworks in this collection were carefully stored in drawers and cupboard shelves. Occasionally they were brought out, perused and in their turn hung on the walls. They were sporadically loaned out for an exhibition. Frequently when an artwork was retrieved by the collector, it was just as fresh, vigorous and surprising as when it was first purchased. The collection of Kersten/van Steenbergen determined their lives for many years. Passionate acquisitions, passionate exhibitions, certainly over a duration period of almost 10 years, in their own ’living room’ gallery and now having to say a heartfelt farewell. The individual intensity of Karla Kersten and Ge van Steenbergen will, in this manner, be an inspiration to a new and young public. The collection will be presented in three parts: in this auction both life and online artworks will be offered and at the end of this year a second part will be sold online.
