In this remarkably simple chair, with four rectangular sections, the seat and back are joined by a system of ‘dove-tailing’ or a ‘comb-system’. Two triangular wedges set in the acute angles act as reinforcement to the seat and the base. The wedges are screwed with brass nuts and bolts, and represent one of the few instances when the hardware became a decorative part of the overall design. This system of joining belies the complex engineering of construction. The nuts and bolts must pass through each of the panels in order to produce the strength needed for the cantilevered structure. This signature design was to become an important addition to many of Rietveld’s later interiors, often being paired with the crate dining table. Furthermore, with the re-evaluation of earlier commissions, Rietveld decided to add the chair to existing interiors, including the Utrecht Schröder House.
