179 Robert Motherwell (1915-1991) Five Circles

signed in pencil ‘Robert Motherwell’ (lower left) lithograph in colours, numbered XIV/ XX (there were 20 HC proofs with Roman numerals and 5 Artist’s proofs besides the edition of 80 numbered copies), unframed, image 86,5x64 cm, full sheet 101,5x70 cm Published and printed in 1972 by Erker-Presse, Siri Engberg, Joan Banach, ‘Robert Motherwell. The Complete Prints 1940-1991’, New York 2003, p. 125, no. 107. Invited by Edition Olympia 1972 through Galerie im Erker in St. Gallen, Switzerland, Motherwell designed Five Circles as a poster, printed and published by Erker- Presse, to publicize the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. The image was ultimately rejected by the selection committee, which had specified that the poster include collage elements.
