Sydenstricker Genetics - Fall Bull Sale [11/22/25]

Genomics Genomics have become more and more important to NCE, and their impact will continue to grow. As a herd that turns in a lot of phenotypes (data) to AHIR, we have already built up the accuracy, and the genomics just adds to it. We turn in some 15,000 pieces of information to AHIR yearly. We have seen the genomic scores lining up closer and closer to the performance of the cattle over time, and have genomic tested every bull calf in the offering for several years. The added plus, besides offering the latest technology, is the parent verification that is included with the testing. We feel the most value is for those younger cattle who have not had gain and ultrasound information processed yet, individuals who land in very small contemporary groups, and ET calves who happen to draw a bad recip or an exceptional recip. We do agree the best way to utilize genomic predictions is to integrate them into the EPD system, just as AAA is doing. We also believe ge- nomics is just one more competitive advantage where the Angus breed is the leader. We do not believe genomic testing can or should be used as a substitute for actual performance testing. We still need that good data, in proper contemporary groups, to train the markers properly. For those sale animals already genomic tested, and incorporated into their EPDs, there will be an HD 50K or AngusGS logo in the book for that animal. This year we tested all 2025 calves and all the fall yearlings. Please check our website, and we will post all genomic results, as well as having them available on sale day. Also, on sale day, we will have a print-out posted by the office with the most up-to-date EPDs available on every sale animal, as of the November 21 NCE run. The $ Indexes We now have six bio-economic Indexes available on Angus cattle. $Weaning is a measure of the economic impact of four primary areas affecting animals from birth through weaning. Those four areas are birth weight, weaning weight, maternal milk, and mature cow size. It assumes an 80-20 mix of cows to heifers. $Feedlot is a measure of the value associated with post-weaning growth along with feed efficiency. $Grid is actually a measure of total end-product value on a quality grid, using ultrasound and carcass data when both are available. $B is a combination of YW, CW, DMI, marbling, ribeye area and fat thickness into a terminal post-wean- ing value. $Maternal Weaned Calf Value includes CED, CEM, WW, Milk, HP, docility, mature weight, FL, and claw and angle EPDs to predict the profitability differences on a weaned calf basis. $Combination is the other newer index available that attempts to measure the combined economic impact of an animal on a dollars per head basis. It is computed by multiplying the $Beef Value by 1.297, and adding that number to the $M value. (This approximates a 20% replacement rate.) $C has quickly become a driving force in the value of Angus breeding stock. With any index, there are assumptions made which may or may not fit your particular operation. For instance, if you are going to use a bull on cows only, the bias toward lower BW in the $W and $M indexes may not be needed. If the bull is going to be used solely on heifers, you may need more bias toward lower birth weights. If you have unlimited feed resources, the bias toward smaller mature size in the $W index may not be needed. The same holds true for particular carcass traits. If you have feedlot and kill data on your cattle, you can fine-tune your growth and carcass trait needs more accurately with individual EPDs than with the $B index. Actually, as the price of beef has driven $B val- ues higher the last few years, Carcass Weight (CW) is a dominant component of the $B computations. If you are already pushing the limits of over-weight carcasses, you may need to select for less CW EPD, therefore making some higher $B bulls less desirable in your scenario. We do believe the $C index is suited very well for most of our customers, and we are including it in this sale book on every animal. We are not printing $G on each lot, as we think most of you prefer to look at the EPDs themselves for the four carcass traits. We still might reference $G in a footnote if the animal is exceptional. On sale day, every EPD and every bio-economic index will be posted for every animal, as of November 21. 77
