“ TT ohn 17 contains the longest record'd! ed prayer offered by our Lord dur ing His public ministry while here upon earth and it has justly been called His High Priestly Prayer.” Matthew Henry said, “The most re markable prayer followed the most full and consoling discourse ever ut tered on earth.” The characteristic of timelessness is here, for the prayer anticipates His age-long intercession in Glory. Dr. Norman B. Harrison likens the chapter to the beauty, glory, and ma jesty of the Holy of Holies in the Old Testament Tabernacle. The chapter begins with Jesus pray ing concerning Himself. I. The Son is engaged in petition on behalf of Himself. 17.T-5 A. That He may be glorified by the Father. V. 1 Here the Son was requesting the Father to support Him on the Cross, bring Him out of the grave and set Him on His own right hand. The purpose: A trium phant achievement of eternal purpose in the ministry of Christ. B. That He may be the giver of life eternal. W . 2-3 Vine tells us that the word “know” (ginosko) indicates a knowledge gained by experience. The tense of the verb signifies a continuous course of progres sive knowledge. A knowledge of inner personality of a person and not only facts. Verse two des cribes the power of the Father’s glorification in and by the Son. C. He pleads His finished work. V. 4 Up until now He had used the
third person with reference to Himself, but now He changes to the pronoun “I”, for it is He who had accomplished all. D. That He may be glorified with the Father—Why? V. 5 1. That He may comfort His dis ciples a. To teach them and us that suffering precedes glory. 2. That the Church may benefit- a. He must be glorified before this can be. II. He is engaged in petition for His own. 17:6-26 A. In W . 6-8 He mentions seven facts concerning His elect: 1. He had revealed the Father’s name to them V. 6 2. They were the Father’s gifts to Him out of the world V. 6 3. They had kept His word V. 6 4. They knew that what the Son had, came from the Father. V. 7 5. His words to them were given by the Father V. 8 6. They had received those words V. 8 7. They knew the Father had sent Him V. 8 B. In W . 9-16 He begins His own High Priestly Prayer. 1. That they may be kept. W . 9-10 2. He depended on the Father to keep them, W . 11-13 3. They had a great need for they would share the world’s hatred for Him. W . 14-16 C. In W . 17-19, He prays for their dedication. D. In W . 20-26, He prays that they be one and that they will be with Him in Glory.
