A BRIEF HISTORY OF MEHARRY MEDICAL COLLEGE
Meharry is a major provider of Black physicians across the country, with approximately half graduating each year in primary care specialties where the need is greatest.
In the past five years, the schools of study at Meharry Medical College have increased from three to five, adding the School of Applied Computational Sciences (2021) to bridge data science and health care disciplines, and the School of Global Health (2024)—the only one of its kind in the U.S.—examining health equity and determinants of health beyond the health care space. The College has also grown into a robust research facility, including recent forays into genomics through The Diaspora Human Genomics Institute (DHGI), established with the mission to improve the quality of the human condition and its environment with a particular focus on persons of African ancestry. Meharry has accomplished all of this in its first 150 years. The number of lives touched by “health caring” Meharrians is uncountable. And the stage is set for the next 150 years with the support of our many champions and friends.
