Basic Communication Styles

• PASSIVE – the passive communicator is one who doesn’t actually communicate. This is the person who comes to the meeting, sits quietly, and speaks only when pressed and may thereafter express apologies for what he or she said. This is also the person who often fails to standup for him/herself • PASSIVE-AGGRESSIVE– the passive-aggressive communicator combines the worst qualities of the passive and aggressive styles of communication. This is the person, who puts on a smile and a friendly face, but who takes a jab each idea, makes jokes at the expense of others, or sabotages the plan.

• ASSERTIVE – the assertive communicator is able to express his/her thoughts, interests, and ideas strongly, even forcefully, but in a manner that shows respect for the thoughts, interests, and ideas of others. An assertive person is able to stand up for his/her rights while maintaining sensitivity to the rights of others. • AGGRESSIVE– the aggressive communicator is out to “win” and is not particularly concerned with the ideas, interests, thoughts or feelings of others. He or she is direct and may display intimidating behaviors, such as speaking loudly or shouting, belittling, interrupting
