Raising Sails, Raising Confidence The Port Stanley Sailing Squadron (PSSS) is celebrating its 62nd year of bringing the joy of sailing to the community, while continuing to inspire the next generation of sailors through its successful Sailing School program. This summer marked the fifth annual Sailing School, an initiative operated by the PSSS under its not-for-profit charter. The program is made possible through the dedication of club volunteers and certified instructors from Ontario Sailing and Sailing Canada, who generously give up a week of their summer to teach. In fact, nearly every club member contributes in some way to help ensure the program’s success. Gilbert Smith, Vice Commodore of the PSSS said, “This year, the school welcomed 16 youth participants in its daytime program and eight adults in the evening course. Throughout the week, students learned the fundamentals of sailing, beginning with the basic components of a sailboat, safe boating practices, and how to handle a boat both on land and on the water.”

By the end of the program, participants who started as complete beginners had developed the confidence and skills needed to safely operate a sailboat. “Just as importantly, they enjoyed plenty of fun on the water while building friendships with fellow sailors that could last a lifetime,” says Gilbert. The Sailing School is designed to remain accessible to the community, with students paying only a nominal registration fee. The remainder of the program is supported through the generosity of local businesses and community organizations. The PSSS extends its sincere thanks to this year’s sponsors: Kanter Marine, Kettle Creek Marina, the Port Stanley Optimists, the Port Stanley Legion, and Geerlinks Home Hardware. Their continued support helps ensure local residents of all ages have the opportunity to discover the lifelong enjoyment of sailing.
