What’s New at Aircraft For Sale

by Ian Hoyt Directory, Marketplace

F LYING has recently introduced PlanePrice, an online valuation estimate connected to aircraft listed on AircraftForSale.com. PlanePrice brings transparency to the aircraft market by providing a fast and free way for prospective buyers to know the approximate market value of an aircraft— without requiring a subscription to a third-party aircraft valuation tool. PlanePrice incorporates pricing assessments from a combination of private and public sources using thousands of recent and historical aircraft transactions. The platform utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) that considers each aircraft’s unique features to provide a current market estimate for it. PlanePrice is available only on AircraftForSale.com. PlanePrice marks a revolutionary milestone for both buyers and sellers in the aviation industry. It harnesses state-of-the-art AI techniques and a vast historical aviation data catalog to develop the fair market price for any aircraft. Every aircraft is different, so PlanePrice utilizes deep contextual information to determine a fair price for each individual aircraft, taking into account its unique characteristics and history. Using a combination of current market trends and pricing curves, the platform provides transparency to prospective buyers, giving them the valuation range of any specific aircraft listed on AircraftForSale.com. Recent transactions with similar characteristics and current aircraft market activity are heavily weighted in PlanePrice’s model, providing unparalleled transparency. For years, consumers have had access to free car and housing price estimate tools on listing marketplaces. Until now, no aircraft marketplace has provided this information for free in the shopping process, creating anxiety for buyers and sellers alike. Much like Zillow’s Zestimate has become the go-to resource for understanding the current market value of homes, or how CarGurus’ auto listing marketplace has empowered buyers to know if a price is fair or not, PlanePrice aspires to do the same in the aircraft market.

THE NEW OWNER Vintage Aircraft Ownership Is Best Viewed as 2 Hobbies in 1 Knowing the airplane’s inner workings and maintenance is an entirely separate proposition.

by Jason McDowell

I want to buy a classic car. Something cool and unique from the ’70s, like a diesel Mercedes sedan. I love the idea of slid- ing behind the wheel of something like that and heading out for coffee on a sunny Sunday morning. Like many others who grew up in southeastern lower Mich- igan, where allegiance to either Ford or Chevy was far more critical than any political leanings, I regularly entertain fleet- ing fantasies of vintage car ownership. Cars from that era are to modern vehicles what vinyl is to digital downloads. They require more attention, but the experience is a pure one that connects with the soul in a way the latest tech-laden, stability-controlled wündercars never will. But whenever I dive into researching the ownership of such sweet machines, I’m quickly reeled back to reality by a certain factor that is common among classic cars and airplanes. Lurking beneath the bodywork are myriad concerns one must become familiar with to keep the machine in good running order. There are many cars and airplanes that require relatively little attention outside of adding fuel and taking them out for a rip. A factory-new Cessna or Cirrus, for example, and nearly any modern car. But the older and more in-

teresting ones demand more, and many prospective owners underestimate or overlook just how much more. To maintain a vintage airplane—even a modest one—in safe, reliable condi- tion on a real-world budget, one must view the knowledge of its inner workings and maintenance as an entirely separate hobby in and of itself. Like any new hobby, this requires time and attention above and beyond flying and clean- ing the airplane. From networking with other owners to proactively sourcing difficult-to-find parts to learning about the latest tips and tricks in type-spe- cific forums, one must become an enthusiastic expert on the history, design, and maintenance of the airplane. My friend Chris is a good example. A few years ago, he purchased a clas- sic Bellanca Super Viking. It’s a sweet machine, with 300 horsepower and a cruise speed that’s twice that of my 170. With a wood and fabric airframe, complex systems, and limited parts availability, it can be described as an air- plane for “advanced” owners. Owning one of these is playing airplane owner on hard mode. Fortunately, Chris possesses the motivation and interest necessary to em- brace the challenge. When he was a kid, his father owned one, and his child-

hood produced many nostalgic memories of flying with dad. Accordingly, diving headfirst into the world of Vi- king ownership is a meaningful endeavor for Chris, and he has happily earned what I estimate is the equivalent of an associate’s degree in Super Viking ownership since purchasing it. Similarly, my friend Kristin recently purchased a Cessna 170B and has assigned herself the task of learn- ing all the minutiae of the type, from sourcing parts to addressing known weak points of the airplane to updating certain systems with modern components. For months, she peppered me with random questions via text. How do 170 owners deal with the limited clearance for ra- dios behind the panel? Is it really advisable to remove the parking brake entirely? What about that landing gear re- inforcement kit I’ve been hearing about? Is it worth it? Both Chris and Kristin have made it their mission to become the most informed aircraft owners possible. Their interest and motivation are so strong, few things will ever catch them off guard. They know what parts and compo- nents are next up for overhaul or replacement. They’ve learned which mechanics in their area are the most qual- ified to work on their airplanes. And, accordingly, nei- ther they nor their bank accounts are likely to be caught by surprise anytime soon. It can be argued that if a prospective vintage aircraft owner doesn’t have the time or motivation to spend an hour or two studying and learning their aircraft type for every hour they spend flying, they’re taking a concern- ingly passive approach to ownership. People do this all the time, but these are the same people who overlook key

maintenance items and don’t know where to turn when an obscure part requires replacement. Their passiveness erodes safety to a certain degree, and it results in an in- crease in both expense and downtime. As I investigated those old diesel Mercedes sedans more closely, I learned a lot. I learned how the floor pans hap- pily deteriorate and rust out if a shaker of salt so much as glances in their direction. I learned that their insanely complex vacuum systems were apparently designed around witchcraft and dark magic. And I learned that if one lacks the time and knowledge to perform their own maintenance, one would be well-advised to marry into a family of qualified mechanics. Before long, I realized that I most certainly do not pos- sess the time or drive to earn the equivalent of an asso- ciate’s degree in Vintage Mercedes Studies. I knew my limits, and I knew I just wanted to be able to hop in and cruise around, fat, dumb, and happy. And my limited re- search revealed that, like a vintage aircraft, this machine is not at all suited to an owner like me. So whether it’s a vintage aircraft or automobile, take a step back before diving in. Evaluate the amount of free time at your disposal. And consider the research and ownership of such a machine to be a hobby in and of it- self, separate from operating it, and worthy of its own time and mental energy. Jason Mcdowell is a private pilot and Cessna 170 owner based in Madison, Wisconsin. He enjoys researching obscure aviation history and serves a. He can be found on Instagram as @cessnateur.

When he was a kid, his father owned one, and his childhood produced many nostalgic memories of flying with dad.

Among the challenges of owning a vintage Bellanca Super Viking is sourcing knowledgeable and experienced maintenance—a task that took this owner years to achieve.

MAINTAINING YOUR AIRPLANE Part 1:

Cessna 172 Skyhawk Avionics Repurposing serviceable material to fly again has always been a thing with GA owners.

by Richard Scarbrough

T here comes a time when social norms fall out of and then back into favor. Take, for example, recycling. In the early days of frontier America, folks had to make do with what they had. Neighbors helped each other and reciprocated when the circumstances warranted. What was once one person’s old barn became anoth- er’s two-wheeled cart, and so forth. In the manufacturing boom of the Industrial Revolution, inexpensive goods flooded the mar- ket, and advertisers beckoned us to drop the old and replace it with the new. This seemed to work well until the 1970s when certain people de- spaired over the landfills filling up, and a new age of convenient curbside recycling emerged. A subset of the population kept the old frontier spirit alive in America, and that would be the general aviation airplane owner. Reduce, reuse, and recycle is not just a slogan for these men and women: It is a mantra. I have personally witnessed the repair of a $45 flight bag handle using CherryMAX blind rivets (I may or may not have had a hand in that, depending on who’s asking).

Out with the Old When researching this article, I wished to find the origin of the phrase “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” As it turns out, the inter-webs attri- bute it to no less than seven individuals on the first page of search results alone. Given that, it is most likely that no one is exactly sure who initially said it. For all we know, Fred G. Sanford said it at some point on the 1970s sitcom Sanford and Son. Oh, and the G stands for “Get up to the hangar and get this stuff.” Do you remember Corey Sampson and his project airplane, a 1966 Cessna 172H? Well, Sampson and I are back at it again. 2024 is a new year with a fresh set of maintenance evolutions. In October, we spoke with Sampson about his maintenance plan, and one of the projects highlighted was an in- strument panel upgrade. Sampson’s current setup is a throwback to days gone by. His audio panel is a King KMA 24, with Narco MK12D comm radios, King KN 64 DME, and Arc RT-359A transponder. As an A&P mechanic, I leave the avionics stuff to the experts, but I recall seeing these components throughout my 35-year career. Functionally, everything works fine, but Corey is ready to upgrade.

Used Serviceable Material (USM) According to aerospace powerhouse Oliver Wyman, there is a tsunami of used serviceable material (USM) coming with regard to aircraft parts. Esti- mates show that the current USM “represents 11 percent of total aftermarket materials spending versus 9 percent in 2019.” While airline fleets command a majority of the USM headlines, GA operators have utilized these repurposed parts for years. Enter Stephen Mercer and his 1982 Piper PA-32R-301T Saratoga. We are track- ing Mercer’s installation, which is in the works at Gardner Lowe Aviation Services in Peachtree City, Georgia, outside of Atlanta. Stephen and Corey, until recently, were hangar mates and often helped each other whenever necessary. GA owners are a tribe that relies on each other for advice, support, and friendship. Corey worked a deal to obtain the avionics panel from Stephen after Gardner Lowe removed it from his Saratoga. The details have yet to be completely ironed out, but to date, the components included are:

a factory-new install, Corey is repurposing USM but also upgrading his Cessna’s panel. Yes, much of Corey’s installation will come from Stephen. There is also an el- ement that is brand new. As part of the conversion, Corey procured two Garmin G5 electronic flight instruments for certificated aircraft and picked them up this week. According to the product’s website, this “replaces traditional electromechan- ical instruments; can be configured in attitude, DG/HI/HSI, and turn coordinator positions.” Approval to install comes from a supplemental type certificate (STC), and this model is applicable to 560 aircraft. Another late-breaking development in the avionics swap plan emerged this week. Garmin recently released service advisory No. 23018 Rev B, stating in part that “effective immediately, display repairs for the WAAS and non-WAAS GPS 400, GNC 420, and GNS 430 are no longer available and have been discontinued.” How does this affect the decision to continue flying the GNS 430 Corey is getting from the Saratoga? That’s how it goes with aircraft maintenance. You have a maintenance plan in place, obtain material, and schedule downtime when Murphy’s law checks in and says, “Not so fast.” We are still unpacking what this means for the continued air- worthiness of the GNS 430. An OEM like Garmin withdrawing support for prod- ucts is a key driver in the parts manufacturing approval (PMA) and designated airworthiness representative (DER) repair world. At press time, it is too soon to tell how this ball will bounce, but rest assured, the industry will find a solution. Just like an airplane trims the controls to meet the wind, so shall we adjust to the changing winds of the aviation aftermarket. Thanks for reading, and stay tuned to see what happens next! Richard Scarbrough is a US Navy Veteran, A&P Mechanic, and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University alumni. His experience ranges from general and corporate aviation to helicopters, business jets, and commercial airliners. Former owner of a 145 repair station, he currently has an aerospace product management role and is a member of the T-C-Alliance. Follow him on X ( Twitter) at @RScarCo.

• Garmin GMA 340 audio panel • Garmin GNS 530W GPS • Garmin GNS 430 GPS • Garmin GTX 330 Transponder • JPI 700 engine monitor • Garmin GI 106A VOR/ILS/GPS Indicator

Next on the schedule for removal are the antennas. The Saratoga is also under- going its annual inspection, and the avionics installation remains active. I intend to document these maintenance evolutions in real time. Given that, everyone knows that plans are fluid, especially in aircraft maintenance. More on that later. Preparing for Installation I feel I’m invoking my inner Charles Dickens, but we have “A Tale of Two Air- planes” instead of A Tale of Two Cities. While Stephen is going full flat panel with

The original stack on the 172 will be replaced with avionics from the Saratoga.

Much of the Saratoga’s old avionics panel will be used to update the 172.

From a design standpoint, Cumberland Contemporary

has emerged as the architectural style of

The Fields. Cumberland Contemporary is defined as a mountain-modern approach that is uniquely inspired by the Cumberland region of Tennessee, which includes the Sequatchie Valley where The Fields is located. Materials used to achieve the style are natural and sustainable, including regionally sourced timber and stone that apply a luxury rustic aesthetic with hints of modern design elements.

For those aircraft owners who live the aviation lifestyle, many find themselves dreaming of living with their aircraft and being able to preflight, taxi, and take off to a destination within minutes of leaving the house. Whether it’s a single-day business trip allowing for dinner plans at home to stay intact, or the entire family loading up to visit friends in a neighboring state—living with your airplane unlocks opportunities. For most, living in a fly-in community requires a trade-off between the amenities expected from a master-planned development and those required by an operating airport—to satisfy everyone’s needs in the household—and thus it remains a dream. At its core, The Fields has been developed to solve this dilemma. Designed by pilots and keeping family, friends, and non-aviation residents in mind as a priority, The Fields marries the best of fly-in community living with world-class amenities everyone can enjoy. “We wanted to design a development that has community at its core, allowing for pilots to enjoy the advantages aviation unlocks while focusing on the key aspects that make a new urbanist community attractive,” says Jon Ricketts, partner in The Fields. “This concept is unique to aviation, as other developments don’t cater to the non-aviation spouse or family. We wanted a community that our spouses would be proud to call home and invite their friends to visit.” At its core, The Fields has been developed to solve this dilemma.
