WINTER IS COMING Winterizing Tips for Your Home As temperatures drop, take time to prepare your home for the winter months. A few simple steps now can prevent costly repairs later and help keep your family safe. Heating & HVAC Have your furnace inspected before the first freeze. Replace furnace filters every three months. Reminder : A building permit is required for furnace replacement. Seal gaps around windows and exterior doors with caulk or weather-stripping (available at most hardware stores). Reminder : A permit is required when replacing windows or front entry doors. Disconnect garden hoses and shut off exterior spigots to prevent frozen pipes. Windows & Doors Plumbing & Irrigation Turn off and drain your irrigation system before the first hard frost. Check that sump pumps and drains are clear and operating properly. Clean gutters and downspouts to prevent ice buildup and roof leaks. Trim back overhanging branches that could cause damage during snow or wind. Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors; replace batteries and clean off dust. Inspect fireplaces and chimneys before the first use of the season. FINAL INSPECTION REMINDERS ONLINE PERMITTING SYSTEM (LAMA) The Village of Willowbrook now offers a convenient online permitting system for residents, contractors, and businesses. Through the new portal, applicants can submit permit applications, report property maintenance complaints, upload plans, pay fees, track reviews, and schedule
Residents who live in a rental unit or an apartment complex: the 2018 International Property Maintenance Code and the International Residential Code state that the minimum required temperature is 68°F during the heating months. Contact the Village for further questions.
GROUND-FEEDING ANIMALS The Village has recently received numerous complaints about ground feeding wildlife. This is a reminder that ground feeding of animals and/or birds, including but not limited to cats, squirrels, chipmunks, rats, mice, rabbits, raccoons, opossums, skunks, deer, ducks, and geese is prohibited. To spread, cast, deposit, or dump food, including birdseed, corn, bread pieces, food scraps, animal chow, or any like or similar substance on any public or private property in the Village is prohibited. Ground feeding animals is a violation of Section 6-2-2-1(F). OPEN BURN POLICY DuPage County and the municipalities within the Tri-State Fire Protection District, including the Village of Willowbrook, have adopted ordinances that prohibit various forms of open burning of leaves, sticks, logs, branches, and other landscape waste originating on the owner’s property.
Taking these steps now will help ensure a warm, safe, and worry- free winter for your household.
