For Yurek Pharmacy & Home Healthcare, rebuilding after the devastating fire next door has become much more than reconstructing a building. It is an opportunity to look at what has worked for the past 60-plus years and prepare the pharmacy for the changing healthcare needs of the community. Now entering the ninth month of reconstruction at 519 Talbot St., the process has been complicated according to Peter Yurek, Co-Owner of Yurek Pharmacy & Home Healthcare. “It’s been a huge learning process dealing with insurance companies, the City’s Planning Department, Heritage Society, etc.,” says Peter. “But we’re getting through it.” When Peter and his brother Jeff took over the family business in 1995, pharmacies were increasingly branching into cosmetics, groceries, gifts and convenience products. The brothers chose a different direction. They expanded into home healthcare, offering mobility aids, bathroom safety products, compression garments and other practical healthcare solutions. Just as importantly, staff were trained to understand those products and help patients make informed decisions. “The community supported us, and we did well,” says Peter. After all these decades, the reconstruction is giving Yurek an opportunity to build on that philosophy at a time when the role of pharmacists is also expanding. Pharmacies now provide services that were traditionally handled by physicians and nurse practitioners, including assessments and treatment for certain minor ailments. The rebuilt Yureks will place an
macy large enough to provide various healthcare services while remaining small enough to know them. “Personal relationships have always made a difference,” he says. “It’s easier to ask questions when you’re talking with people who know you. That will never change.” With many baby boomers choosing to remain in their homes as they age, supported when necessary by nurses and personal support workers, home healthcare will once again be a major focus. For Peter, it is almost a return to where the brothers began in 1995 but designed for today’s healthcare environment. “Ultimately, the pharmacy you choose isn’t just about where you fill a prescription,” he says. “It’s about having a trusted healthcare partner who is accessible, knowledgeable, and invested in your well-being.”
