A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12
Year 12 students have enjoyed a variety of events this week.On Tuesday afternoon, all Year 12 A Level Drama students took part in a devising workshop with theatre group, Complicite. Organised by the Drama department, pupils took part alongside drama students from Grey Court School, with the aim of helping them with creativity and collaboration in their work. All Year 12 Politics and Media Studies students were invited to attend a talk by Jim Pickard, which also took place on Tuesday afternoon. Jim is the Deputy Political Editor for the Financial Times and gave a very interesting talk about his journalistic career covering current affairs in politics. He spoke enthusiastically about his career and how media coverage has influenced voting behaviour and the outcomes of elections. He also discussed how social media is impacting politics and elections, and the dangers and opportunities it presents. It was fascinating to hear his first hand account of life behind the scenes at Westminster. Next week a number of Year 12 students will be supporting this year’s Drama Production, in performances taking place on Tuesday to Thursday. We look forward to seeing them on stage and behind the scenes. As part of their A Level in Art, all Year 12 Art and Photography students will be attending a 4-day residential trip to St Ives in Cornwall. They will visit a number of museums and exhibitions in the area as well as take inspiration from the beautiful beaches, dramatic coastlines, and vibrant light. I am sure they will all hugely benefit from it.
Finally, on Friday, we kick off our Christmas activities for the term with a handful of Year 12 students joining in Waldegrave’s tradition of Carol Singing at Fenwicks.
Don’t forget, on Monday 25 November the school is closed to students due to staff training.
MR STAVROU, HEAD OF YEAR 12
‘You don’t understand me’ - Dr Tara Porter A relevant, poignant non-fiction book catalysing the understanding of young women’s experiences in adolescence and leading towards adulthood. Dr Tara Porter utilises her 27 years of experience as a therapist and psychologist to pinpoint the ‘why’ to our actions regarding friendships, education, love, body image etc. Using real life scenarios mixed with scientific knowledge, readers can develop more comfort in themselves and have a better perception of others over the 10 topics discussed. This is a must read for not only members of our school navigating teenage life, but also the parents of these students who strive to support their child/ren the best they can. I haven’t stopped mentioning this book since I read it! - Aisha Y, Year 12 BOOK OF THE MONTH
