Close Reading: Text-Dependent Questions and Text-Based Answers for Complex Texts

Learn how to select complex texts for a variety of learners in a variety of content areas. Then build a common language and set of expectations for closely reading a text. Participants will practice creating text-dependent questions and demonstrating how to read a text with a keen eye for nuance and detail while preparing to cite examples from the text to answer questions. Learning outcomes: • Understand the concept of complex texts and how to determine text complexity • Define a common language and understanding of a close-reading framework • Write text-based questions for grade- and content-appropriate texts • Impart a process for finding text-based answers • Develop a close-reading lesson that includes text-based questions, suggested text-based answers, and opportunities for constructed responses
