Getting Started with Guided Reading

Guided reading instruction is a key step on the path to independent reading with deep comprehension. In this small-group setting students are carefully guided and supported as they practice new reading skills and strategies introduced during whole-class instruction. This session introduces the framework for guided reading lessons and helps participants select appropriate texts and practice instructional strategies that match students’ zones of proximal development. Learning outcomes: • Understand the components of an effective guided reading lesson • Use text complexity characteristics to select a text and an instructional focus • Plan a guided reading lesson • Set up a classroom to support guided reading instruction • Develop a 20-day launch plan for guided reading

Diving Deeper With Guided Reading

Small-group instruction offers opportunities to differentiate instruction in word study or response writing. This session explores activities to perform during guided reading lessons that help readers build automaticity with sight words, practice word patterns, and respond to texts. Learning outcomes: • Evaluate current guided reading practices to identify areas for growth • Plan and conduct sight word, word study, and guided writing lessons grounded in science of reading principles to support students at all reading levels • Develop prompting and formative data-collection routines to inform personalized learning • Craft a guided reading lesson plan that includes targeted sight word, word study, and guided writing activities
