Independent Learning
Getting Started with Structured Independent Reading
Daily independent reading is essential to developing literacy skills, but not all types of independent reading will produce the same results. In this session participants will define what structured independent reading is and isn't and explore how to create a rich reading environment. Then we'll work together to unpack each component of structured independent reading, including the learning environment, conferring, and supporting and engaging readers. Learning outcomes: • Define structured independent reading and explain how it differs from other types of individual reading time • Establish a learning environment and procedures that promote independent reading • Support student book selection, reading stamina, and goal-setting • Plan literacy instruction and facilitate student conferences to support individual needs • Provide intentional and purposeful activities to develop engaged, accountable readers
