Session 2: Trauma-Informed Instructional Practices

More than two-thirds of students report at least one traumatic event in their lives by age 16, and these traumatic experiences can have a lasting impact on their emotional, behavioral, and academic growth. In this session we’ll identify the symptoms of trauma and explore how to foster an inclusive, safe learning environment with a focus on community-building, social-emotional learning, and restorative practices. Learning outcomes: • Identify and describe various forms of trauma • Describe the potential impact of trauma on student learning, behavior, and development • Cultivate a trauma-sensitive learning environment • Employ instructional strategies to support students who have experienced trauma • Equip teachers with self-care strategies to mitigate the risk of secondary traumatic stress

Session 3: Integrating School and Community Social-Emotional Supports

This session builds the capacity of school leadership teams to effectively integrate social-emotional supports with the services of community providers. Leadership teams are encouraged to invite current or prospective community service providers to this session. Learning outcomes: • Align the work of families, schools, and community mental health providers • Analyze classroom-based social-emotional support through the lens of clinical practice • Synthesize social-emotional supports and strategies with community service providers for a wraparound approach • Implement a universal schoolwide system of supports to address mental health
