Addressing Barriers to Learning and Student Motivation The first part of this full-day session will explore the Learning Supports Framework, an integrated system for schools to improve student performance through six key practice areas: • Classroom-based supports • Student and family interventions • Support for transitions • Crisis prevention and intervention • Community involvement • Family engagement Learning outcomes: • Examine why a system of learning supports is imperative for achieving your school improvement goals • Explore the characteristics of a comprehensive system of learning supports • Analyze existing resources in your school with a focus on dismantling barriers to learning and improving services for students During the second half of the session we’ll explore strategies for boosting students’ achievement with strategies to increase their intrinsic motivation and effort. Learning outcomes: • Apply the Learning Supports Framework to address a lack of motivation and effort • Understand the root causes of a disenchantment with school Engaged in Learning: Driving Improvement through Attendance Studies have shown that just two days a month spent out of school can seriously harm a student's chance of graduating on time. During the first part of this full-day session, we’ll explore how to address absenteeism as a leading symptom of larger barriers to learning. Learning outcomes: • Determine the root causes of attendance issues • Develop strategies to help improve student attendance and engagement In the second half of this session we’ll delve into strategies for increasing student engagement and motivation to combat dropout rates and help students gain the skills to graduate.
