Leading Systemwide Literacy
Leading Guided Reading Instruction This session is built on the research of Gay Su Pinnell and Irene C. Fountas, the most famous names in guided reading. We’ll examine a guided reading lesson, describe elements of guided reading using the same language as teachers, and identify the role of guided reading in balanced literacy. Learning outcomes: • Describe balanced literacy using the same language as your teachers • Understand the purpose of each component of balanced literacy • Create an action plan to support the implementation of balanced literacy Leading Balanced Literacy Balanced literacy is a model of instruction with numerous components that require responsive decision-making by teachers every day. In this session we’ll take a brief look at each component of balanced literacy and how it should help students progress as skilled readers and writers. We’ll also evaluate what your teachers’ instruction should look like and study the areas of support they’ll need to fully embrace a balanced literacy classroom.
