Collecting Guided Reading Data Our previous sessions have helped instructional leaders develop an implementation plan and metrics to support walk-throughs. Now it’s time to practice collecting and analyzing data and to explore next steps that will support literacy teachers in their instruction and conferring. Learning outcomes: • Identify the characteristics of an effective independent reading program • Describe the components of effective reading conferences • Promote the critical role of independent reading in balanced literacy • Support the implementation of independent reading Leading Independent Reading Instruction The ultimate goal of every reading approach is to enable students to transfer new skills and strategies to their independent reading. This session will identify the characteristics of an effective independent reading program and explore the research into why voluminous independent reading plays such a critical role in balanced literacy. We’ll also study the various types of teacher-student conferences to assess student growth during independent reading time.
